Why Trauma-Informed Language Matters in Yoga Classes
The words we choose as yoga teachers matter more than we sometimes realize.
For many students, stepping onto the mat carries more than just physical tension — it can carry past experiences of emotional or physical trauma. The language used in a yoga class can either help students feel safe, empowered, and in control of their bodies… or unintentionally trigger discomfort.
Trauma-informed yoga shifts the focus from “commanding” movement to offering choices, autonomy, and compassionate guidance. Simple changes like saying “You might explore…” instead of “Do this” help students reconnect with their own inner awareness and sense of agency.
At YogaFit, we believe yoga teachers have the power to create spaces where true healing can begin.
