Archivist Louise Sandberg investigates the tragic 1860 Pemberton Mill collapse in Lawrence, MA, and the engineering flaws behind the disaster.

On January 10, 1860, the five-story Pemberton Mill in Lawrence, Massachusetts, suddenly collapsed, trapping hundreds of workers beneath tons of rubble and machinery before an uncontrollable fire broke out. Recorded at the Lawrence Heritage State Park Visitor Center, this special White Fund presentation features former Lawrence Public Library archivist Louise Sandberg and Lawrence History Center Collections Manager Amita Kiley as they explore the devastating event that reshaped New England industrial history.

The lecture examines the screening of the documentary The Case Against Capt. Bigelow, diving into the coroner's inquest that scrutinized Chief Engineer Capt. Charles H. Bigelow and the fatal use of defective cast-iron support columns. Sandberg details the profound toll on Lawrence's growing Irish immigrant community, the immediate grassroots relief efforts, and the long-term struggle toward workplace safety and industrial building standards.
