The Hopewell Valley Regional Board of Education has appointed Kenneth Mason as interim athletic director.

Mason is temporarily replacing the district's athletic director, Winfield Becker, who has been placed on administrative leave by the Hopewell Valley Regional School District.

Becker was recently charged by Plumstead Township police with loitering, prowling at night and summary harassment for allegedly peering into the window of a young girl at her home.

Mason, who was appointed by the school board during its August regular meeting and started in his new interim position on Aug. 21, had served since April as interim athletic director for Ewing Township Public Schools.

He previously served as athletic director for the Plumsted Township School District, athletic director in the West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional School District and director of health, physical education and athletics at Lawrence High School.

Lawrence Township has received $2 million in state funding toward renovations at the Lawrence Community Center, formerly known as the Lawrence Neighborhood Service Center, at 295 Eggerts Crossing Road.

State Sen. Shirley K. Turner (D-Mercer Hunterdon) secured the funding in the 2027 state budget for the Lawrence Township-owned building, which has been vacant since October 2024.

Township officials are working toward reopening the center. The Mayor's Task Force on the Future of the Lawrence Community Center was created in November 2024 to guide potential uses for the the center.

The Mayor's Task Force released a report in September 2025 which recommended a townshipwide vision that named the LCC as a place for all residents - across age, race, income and neighborhood - while also ensuring special attention to communities with limited access to other resources.

A two-month-long investigation into co***ne distribution in Trenton netted two arrests, the seizure of 160 grams of suspected co***ne with a street value of $8,000 and $36,000 in cash on Aug. 6, according to the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office.

Andrew Anderson, 35, and Aniyah Boone, 25, both of Patriots Way in Eastampton Township, were charged with narcotics offenses and money laundering, the Prosecutor's Office said. A motion was filed to detain Anderson pending trial, but Boone was released pending future court proceedings.

Police carried out search warrants at Anderson's home, a storage unit in Lawrence Township, two vehicles, and Anderson himself on Aug. 6.

A search warrant executed at Anderson's home resulted in the seizure of approximately $32,000 in cash, assorted drug paraphernalia and three large digital scales. Boone was detained outside of the home without incident.

While the guys in the Successful Failures are steeped in real country, traditional classic folk songs, blues, bluegrass and Americana music, it is not quite right to characterize them as a roots music band.

To be sure, they play familiar and obscure chestnuts from Johnny Cash and Hank Williams, but they also celebrate the music of the Replacements, the Clash and even the Beatles when it is called for.

It all depends on the audience, explains guitarist and singer-songwriter Mick Chorba, whose “mostly” Americana-roots music band has gained a regional following during the past two decades.

Chorba, who was raised by supportive parents and sisters, said all he ever wanted to do was play music and be able to make a living at it.

Like many of the family farmers who are his neighbors in northern Burlington County, Chorba embraced “the lifestyle” years ago but needed to make a living in the meantime.

Lawrence Township is fortunate to have an abundance of parks, wooded areas, streams, and open spaces that contribute to the character and beauty of our community. These natural areas are home to a wide variety of wildlife, including deer, foxes, coyotes, hawks, owls, raccoons, groundhogs, and, on rare occasions, black bears. Most of us enjoy seeing these animals from a distance and appreciate the balance they bring to our local ecosystem.

Recently, the Township responded to a tragic incident in which a small dog was killed by another animal in a park adjacent to heavily wooded areas. Although the specific animal involved could not be definitively identified, the event serves as an important reminder that we share our community with wildlife. While such incidents are extremely uncommon, they underscore the importance of understanding how to coexist safely with the animals that share our environment.
