New work!

Saturday was very rainy and chilly here in New Jersey. It was the perfect day to head into the studio and work on some portraiture. Lucky, I had a willing participant – my son, Matt! Matt is …

1/52.

The first JSP Visual Week In Review is posted. Look back, still, a little, looking forward too. I don't make resolutions, but I do have three things I'll try to do going forward. I did one of them this week - after a delay of about 30 years. Click the link in my bio find out what it was.

Also at the links, good stuff from Grant over at the UN of Photo who's looking at the color versus B&W debate. It's a good read; Another good read, Eric Meola reflects on one of Pete Turner's iconic photo over on About Photography; the Top 10 creative ads of 2025, via Fast Company; and remembering National Geographic photographer, Robert Caputo, who recently passed away.

Also, the books I've been reading, the movies I've watched this week (Tom! Meg! Frank!) and an album that's been on repeat lately.

All this for free. Just click the link below

The Asbury Juke's Jeff Kazee warms up a cold night in the Asbury Park.

“Your creativity starts with curiosity.” ~ Frank Gehry

How great a quote from Mr. Gehry is that?

Getting on to the end of the year, and even with that, it feels like winter has come on quicker this year.

And by that I mean, the cold temps, the sunsets of fire, the flat, flat winter light.

It's good though. The snow in NJ made things look beautiful. The lights around town look great.

And Santa even came around this week, too!

I talk about all this in this week's latest newsletter, free, at the link in my bio.

Also in this week's newsletter, links to good stuff like, the trailer for the King of Color, Lawrence Herbert (especially since the Pantone Color of the Year was recently announced); some amazing jazz album covers, via The Daily Heller; A good read about Ai, from Dan Milnor of Blurb Books; a look at Jeff Wall's post-truth photography, via Hyperallergic

Also, a look at a new-to-me photographer, George A. Gardiner; my favorite photo of the week, via ; visual inspiration this week, via and also what I watched (very eclectic mix of films); what i read, and what a listened to...a jazzy holiday playlist.

All this, free, at the link in my bio.

Did I say free?

This week's free newsletter.

“You have to be fearless if you’re to be a photographer. There’s no time for being intimidated.” – Martin Parr

Woke up to the sad news about the passing of Martin Parr. Kinda capped off a week where I was reading about, and thinking, about death.😬

Not in a bad way, really, just in your usual existential "what's the purpose" way. More thoughts at the link in my bio, which will take you to this week's JSP newsletter.

It's a little light, this week, so perfect for you skimmers and clickers. The longest is probably the "Best Lines I Read This Week," from Denis Johnson. Don't miss it.

Also links to good stuff like a video about seasonal beverages, via Elle Cordova; thinking clearly, an essay from Mike Maney; a new jazz piece from Flea (yeah, the guy from the Red Hot Chili Peppers), and a look back at Martin Parr's career, via The Guardian.

Plus, the usuals: What I read, listened to and watched this week. Also, my favorite image of the week, via Matthew Rolston Studio and some visual inspiration, via Ted Croner, who would have turned 103 this week.

Again, a little light, but hey, it's free!

“You have to be fearless if you’re to be a photographer. There’s no time for being intimidated.” – Martin Parr This felt like an odd week to me, not quite being able to catch up. After drivin…
