NEVER COMPARE YOUR VALUE TO OTHERS WHEN YOU ARE BUILDING YOUR CREATIVE BUSINESS !
I have learned many lessons when it comes to building, growing and expanding a creative business. So many people will be able to tell you what works for them; but the truth is, no formula is "one size fits all" - When I first started out as a professional artist, I compared my artwork and talents to many others.
THIS WAS THE WORST THING THAT I COULD HAVE DONE!
Not only did putting myself in comparison mode hinder me from creating at my fullest potential; it also put me in a frequency of self doubt. This turned into me going on extensive hiatuses which caused me to loose sight of what mattered most. I was losing sight of my 'WHY'.
As an artist, there are times when it is hard to separate yourself from the harsh realities that come along with the business realm. Especially when your career is based off of a passionate resonance that you have with life itself.
Just taking the highest bidder for my abilities to transform thoughts into things just did not sit well with my spirit. Projects would come that most would jump to; however I had to say no when it did not align.
THERE WILL COME A TIME WHEN YOU WILL CHOOSE TO SAY NO.
When I started saying no, this caused me to lose income, and challenged me to figure out other ways to make money. One day I sat in my thoughts. Riddled with the "stresses" that I thought were suffocating at the time. "How can I figure this out?"
At the time I was moving states and needed money FAST. I’m convinced that in this moment God spoke to me and said “ your gift is more than you allow”. Later that day I was introduced to an app called Task Rabbit. No this is not as paid ad.
I signed up for the app and posted pictures to show my work. Within 24 hours I was booked. Now… the job that I was booked for was not as enthusiastic as painting murals or coming up with creative concepts. It was simply painting a living room white. The complete OPPOSITE of what intrigues my imagination.
Throughout painting the endless white wall, I came to the realization that YES, this was borings and not my idea of fun what so ever; BUT I learned to realize that it was a moment to expand and view a different picture, thus changing my perspective. This boring white wall, symbolized clean slate for newness to arrive. This, what seemed to be a mundane task, was actually true representation of my skill that I had nurtured so long. While this task was boring to me, it was of value to the person that hired me.
At that moment, I knew that there was value that I had to give and share.
So, I have a proposition for you…
Write a list of 10 valuable skills, trades or information that you possess currently. Think of “how can I help?” “How can I make an impact?” “What do I have to offer?”
These were the starting questions that led me to making my first $20,000 installation.
You are a creator and your gift is NECESSARY to be seen and shared. The only person holding yourself back is you !
