Power outage shuts down east Lawton

By Kim McConnell
A fire in PSO’s eastside power station is the apparent cause of a massive power outage that left east Lawton and towns in eastern Comanche County without power early Wednesday.
Tim Hushbeck, spokesman for PSO, said early Wednesday that while the cause was still under investigation, the fire appears to have started from a lightning strike from a storm that hit the area sometime around 4 a.m.
While there were scattered small outages in west Lawton, the brunt of the problem could be seen in east Lawton and as far west as downtown and as far south as Lawton-Fort Sill Regional Airport and the surrounding area. In the heaviest affected area, almost 8,500 customers lost power about 5 a.m. Elgin, Fletcher, Apache, Cement and the Lake Ellsworth area also lost power about 6:17 a.m., adding another 8,400 customers.
“At this point, I don’t have an ETR (estimated time of restoration),” Hushbeck said about 7:30 a.m., saying the priority is securing the power station, then switching customers to other power sources. “We have to get it safe first.”
Lawton Public Schools switched its students to a virtual day today, citing power outages across the city. Flower Mound, Bishop, Elgin and Fletcher announced they would cancel school.

I want to take a moment and thank the community for rallying together and helping me put together some swag bags of Lawton Fort Sill Love last minute. Next Generation Performing Arts Camp finished out their week long camp where they put on the Broadway production of “Legally Blonde the Musical”. Nineteen students sent in a virtual audition and a resume to apply. They were then selected and cast in the show just weeks before camp. The students and about 20 adults from Oklahoma and across the states put together one heck of a show, IN JUST ONE WEEK. 10 of these students were whom I consider my theatre kids and each of them mean the world to me! So happy they got to experience this!

I had the pleasure spending some time this week watching them go through workshops, rehearsal, and create a bond that no other industry can form, like theatre can. And I also assisted on several fronts to ensure it got as much coverage as possible to show a community of support. It was spectacular and down right hilarious. Those kids and the staff worked their butts off and it paid off. It’s a huge deal for this camp to be held right here in Lawton Fort Sill at Cameron University and next year they plan to be back.

Several businesses and myself put these bags together as a thank you for being here and showing yet again, that truly, the arts is what makes SWOK thrive!
