This year's winter meetings for MLB are moving really slowly. Nothing seems to be happening, as no real news is coming out. What's going on?

The Royals' payroll is basically on the same level as it was in 2016-2017. While that, on the surface, seems good, looking at just everyday inflation and baseball inflation, they are not keeping up.

As weird as it may seem, the Royals' path to contention might be in just having a mediocre outfield. Last year, they were one of, if not the worst, hitting outfield. With just a small improvement, along with improvement with new hitting instruction, they could be contenders.

The Chiefs have to treat every game as a playoff game now, and with that, they must be willing to use Mahomes' legs as they did last year versus the Texans and Bills. The Texans give up the most rushing yards per carry by QBs. The Chiefs need to exploit this weakness.

It has felt like the Royals' outfield has been the place where decent careers go to die, or that the cost of a good outfielder has been too much. The options to get that player for 2026 aren't lining up.

Is the Royals' lack of action last season going to cause them to act irresponsibly this year? At the moment, they are playing a bit of a game of chicken, but at some point, to move forward, they're likely going to have to pay a higher price than they'd like.
