πŸŒ” Waxing Gibbous moon over the Outer Sunset District neighborhood as seen from Sunset Dunes along Ocean Beach in San Francisco

πŸ’™ My first time visiting the Great Highway in San Francisco and I was completely charmed by it

❗ If you recognize this location, please correct me if I'm wrong about which neighborhood this is

πŸ™οΈ In my life, I've been to the largest cities in the United States

🚐 So in van life I seek the slower pace of smaller towns, and the quiet of wide open spaces. Still, there is one city that beckons me back

πŸŒ‰ San Francisco

🌊 I made this photo there last week

πŸ‘„ Angel's Ladies Brothel near Beatty, Nevada. Closed in August 2014

🚫 The intimidating "No Trespassing" signs limited my options for different POVs. It's rumored that, although official business may be discontinued, people still live on the property. The threat of shotgun-toting residents very much inhibited any thoughts of my overstepping even a little bit

πŸ›©οΈ The wrecked plane remains from a promotional stunt conducted by the previous owners when the brothel was known as Fran's Star Ranch

❗Note: No innocent johns were harmed in this stunt

πŸͺ‚ As the story goes, they painted a large star on the desert floor and dropped a mattress into the center. To win a free night with their lady of choice, contestants were challenged to parachute from the plane and land on the mattress

❗ In dramatic fashion, however, the plane experienced engine failure and crashed into some wires. The pilot and passengers were unhurt.

πŸ† A relative win all around. The men lived to tell the tale. Fantastic publicity for the brothel. And the ladies didn't have to give anything away for free

⚠️ Disclaimer: My version of events is based on the most scant internet research. I'm not a historian, People

πŸ˜‰ I'm a photographer

πŸ“Έ More attempts at portraiture. Natural, early evening light

πŸ“Έ My nephew, Austin, was kind and patient sitting for his portrait as I figured things out πŸ™Œ

πŸ“Έ These, along with the portraits of his sister, are birthday gifts for their mom, Mary. I'm so very pleased (and relieved! πŸ˜…) that she likes them

πŸ“Έ I think I've hit the limit on family imposition. I'll have to start asking strangers to sit for portraits to further my learning

πŸ’™πŸ©· Thank you Austin and Kyra for being so good to your auntie. I loved our one-on-one time together ❀️

πŸ“· Learning portraiture

πŸ“· Some attempts at making photos of my niece, Kyra, as a birthday gift for her mom, my sister Mary

πŸ“· I have no lighting kit and tried to work with the available natural light

πŸ“· Kyra is rarely without her guitar and never without her own camera. Check out her Instagram page to see the world through her lens as she travels

πŸ“Mono Lake in California's Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains. One of the oldest lakes in the western hemisphere

🀯 Estimated to be between 750,000 and 1 million years old

πŸ’¨ It's a saline soda lake (high alkaline and salty). On this windy day, the large plumes of powder-fine salt dust blown off the exposed lake bed made for a dramatic and layered photo

πŸ₯Ύ This shot was made from a vista point on US 395. But you can hike and kayak in Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve. That's what I intend to do next time. I really want to get some photos of the otherworldly limestone spires, known as tufa towers

πŸ›£οΈ There will indeed be a "next time." I discover something new every time I travel US 395, and revisit the places I love

πŸ¦β€β¬› For bird watchers, the salty water of Mono Lake sustains brine shrimp that attracts millions of migratory birds
