After nearly a decade of work, Inova Loudoun Hospital on Tuesday celebrated the designation of its Virts Miller Family Emergency and Trauma Center as a Level II trauma center – the first in the county.

As a Level II center, the hospital delivers immediate, expert trauma care 24/7, with trauma-trained surgeons, specialized nurses, critical care teams, and advanced equipment always on hand.

“That achievement reflects years of dedication, collaboration and a shared belief in what exceptional care should look like,” Inova Loudoun Hospital President Susan Carroll said.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office has generated extensive controversy over the past few months because of its agreement with federal immigration officials that allows county jail inmates with immigration detainers to be held for up to 48 hours after their release date for pickup by immigration agents.

However, despite that cooperation between ICE and LCSO’s Corrections Division, the Sheriff’s Office has consistently maintained that deputies do not conduct field immigration enforcement and have said, in the past, that LCSO field operations personnel do not have access to immigration information. That includes statements by Lt. Col. Bob Mosier at a May 6 Board of Supervisors meeting, when he said that deputies would only find out about a person’s immigration status once they had been booked into the county jail and Homeland Security contacted LCSO.

U.S. Rep. Suhas Subramanyam (VA-10-D) on Saturday held a town hall meeting to discuss the government shutdown, placing the blame on Republicans who, he said, failed to introduce a bi-partisan bill that wouldn’t contribute to a health care crisis.

Without passage of a bill to extend spending, the government shutdown began Oct. 1.

Subramanyam said during the town hall that his top priority was for the government to re-open. He said very few Republicans seemed interested in negotiating.

“I want for us to sit down, Democrats and Republicans and negotiate this,” Subramanyam said. “The problem I’m having is that they haven’t even called people back next week to come to work, come into session.”

Two Loudoun high school students have attracted over 40,000 users internationally to their online learning platform. They did it by drawing on the power of video games.

The service, leveluplearning.app, lets learners take free courses in machine learning, computational biology and cyber security—with content infused with boss battles, assignments, badges, experience points, and level ups. Independence High School Junior Abhinav Duddala and Rock Ridge High School Senior Ajay Vinjamuri have been developing and maintaining the website for the past two years.

Loudoun County Public Schools has removed several types of student violations from the internal list of offenses that require staff members to file reports with law enforcement, including using slurs, making sexual remarks, and violating the school’s internet policy. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office is concerned about some of those decisions.

Loudoun Now previously reported that the school division referred 3.7% of students to police for a variety of violations in academic year 2024-25, down from 4.6% the year before. Now, new details have been obtained about those offenses that the district requires staff members to report.

Loudoun County expects to receive $10 million from the Purdue Pharma/ Sackler Family opioid settlement.

The $7.4 billion settlement—$6.5 billion of which is owed by the Sackler family, the owners of Purdue Pharma—is intended to support opioid abatement efforts nationwide.

The Attorney General’s Office announced in June that Virginia would receive up to $103.8 million in the settlement.
Executive Director of the Virginia Opioid Abatement Authority Anthony McDowell said the funds are split: 15% for the state, 30% for localities, and 55% to the OAA, which issues grants to help combat opioid addiction.
