For 14-year-old Lexi Fairbanks, the summer ended with a moment she’ll never forget: guiding her horse into the Grand Prix arena at the Lamplighter Festival of Champions in Wayne, Ill., one of the nation’s most prestigious dressage competitions.

The Lehi Historical Society is pleased to invite the public to the John Y. Smith House Historical Marker Unveiling on Wednesday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m., at 518 N. 100 East.

A short unveiling program will feature a theatrical telling of the home’s story, followed by light refreshments. Afterward, attendees are invited to watch a video home tour prepared by the homeowners, Jess and Shaylie Green. Amazingly, through the years, the house has remained largely in its original state.

“This is the coolest thing I have ever seen,” exclaimed a young man standing in front of a 1923 Model T Ford. The car had been restored to its original glory and was owned by Jason Smith. It was one of two dozen or more restored vehicles of many makes, models, and years. Crowds gathered around the vintage vehicles and took pictures of the restored masterpieces.

Inside the Legacy Center, hundreds of visitors, mostly older Lehi citizens, viewed the artwork of many Lehi natives. “I didn’t know so many Lehi folks were such great artists,” said Susan Holbrook Chadwick, who was visiting Heritage Days for the first time. It was a coming home of sorts for many old-time Lehi residents. Hugs and reminiscing seemed the order of the day.

Construction on one of the most anticipated and hotly debated road projects in northwest Utah County is officially underway. Beginning Sept. 2, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) will break ground on a $77 million project to install flex lanes on Pioneer Crossing.

The project, which has been in development for years, aims to alleviate growing traffic while optimizing the existing roadways. UDOT confirmed that only a few feet of land will be purchased at corners near 2300 West/Saratoga Road to accommodate turn lanes. By late 2026, Pioneer Crossing will feature a seven-lane “flexible” configuration, allowing lanes to shift direction during peak travel hours. The concept has been tested in Utah before and yielded favorable results in Taylorsville on 5400 South.

After an incredible inaugural performance in the winter, Sentinel Theatre has done it again. Their production of “Bright Star” was everything I wished for and more. Warm, witty and whimsical, each moment was perfectly crafted to tell this welcoming story with heart.

Director Andrew Jefferies’ love for this piece is evident throughout the entire work. Moments are made special with love stories all around, songs are bursting with energy, and the entire production gels together in a way that can be difficult with a piece involving a time jump.

The Lehi High School football team bounced back from a tight loss with a big shutout victory over Kuna (ID) 36-0 on the road Friday (Aug. 29).

It took the Pioneers some time to settle in, but once they did, they got good production from their stars on both sides of the ball to build towards the big win over a solid Kaveman program that finished in the Idaho statewide top 10 last season.

The Skyridge football team crushed the East High Leopards in a 68-0 shutout at home on Friday (Aug. 29).

Though the offense stalled early with senior quarterback Kaneal Sweetwyne’s first interception of the season, the defense held its ground, forcing a quick three-and-out that set up Briggs Parker’s 40-yard punt return which led to a five-yard plunge into the endzone by Sweetwyne.

After graduating from Lehi High School in 1959, Stanley Wanlass attended BYU. His interests were vast, so he studied a myriad of topics before finally landing on a Bachelor of Fine Arts.

He studied medicine so he could learn not only morphological anatomy and cadaver dissection but also kinesiology, which helped him understand the configuration of muscles as the bones changed positions. He studied art history, the old masters, classical literature and music. “I thought I had wasted my time,” said Wanlass of his winding path through school, “until all of these things kind of came together.” In time, he realized these disciplines helped him understand how to invoke the senses and set a mood in art.

Lara M. Bangerter | Lehi Historical Society Editor’s Note: This is the second of a three-part series on world-famous automotive artist and Lehi native Stanley Wanlass. Tune in next week to learn more about his accomplishments, what he has learned throughout his illustrious career and how “to be ...
