On this 4th of July, we pause to reflect on the values that define our nation—freedom, resilience, and unity. As we celebrate this important day in American history, may we honor the sacrifices made for our independence and continue to strive toward a future marked by progress and shared purpose.

Wishing you a safe, meaningful, and inspiring Independence Day.

History is often hidden in plain sight, waiting to be rediscovered — and Thursday, Atascosa County proudly took its place in the unfolding story of the 1813 Battle of Medina.

For generations, the true location of this pivotal but often overlooked battle remained a mystery. Through a combination of archaeological discoveries and historical research using original maps, documents, and firsthand accounts, we now know that key moments of the battle took place right here in Atascosa County.

As part of this effort including countless hours of researching archives, maps and documents that hadn't been closely examined in decades, have paid off. I’ve gathered historians, metal detectorists, archaeologists, and landowners, and drawing on archival research to help guide the search. Our work, alongside partners like Kay Hindes and Brandon Seale, the Atascosa County Historical Commission Metal Detectorists, have helped uncover a range of authentic artifacts now on display at the Witte Museum in San Antonio! Although it is a sample of the total excavated specimens, these artifacts have been XRF tested against the measuring stick of the Blue Wing Road Site.

This new evidence is reshaping what we know about the largest and bloodiest battle ever fought on Texas soil — one that predates the Alamo by over two decades. And for the first time, Atascosa County’s role in this history is finally being recognized.

Brandon Seale’s upcoming documentary A New History of Old Texas offers a moving look at this work — and we’re proud that so much of the story begins right here, with our county’s land, our community, and our collective effort.

Pivotal History lives here.
And it’s thanks to the dedication of many — past and present — that the story is being told.

I greatly anticipate the opportunity to further engage with accomplished professionals.

This morning, some of our Metal Detecting Team provided a presentation for children at the Longhorn Museum. The kids had the chance to learn about metal detecting and most importantly, hunt for real coins.
The session was taught by ACHC Metal Detecting Committee Chair David Emery, Butch Bujol and Jerome Laporte. The kids walked away with the practical knowledge of the metal detector and a pocket full of coins !
We thank the volunteers that provided the experience for the kids today and to the Longhorn Museum for hosting this event.

On this Memorial Day, we pause to remember the ones that didn’t return home. The ones that are heroes in our nation’s history. We also remember their families, that were forced to continue life without their loved ones.

All this, an unselfish act of patriotism and service to a nation, to our United States of America 🇺🇸

Today, we solemnly commemorate your memory and your legacy.

On Monday evening, Part I of The Voices of History was presented at the Longhorn Museum. It was a wonderful evening filled with thoughtful engagement and great feedback. I was honored to publicly share some of these historical photos for the first time, giving attendees a glimpse into the legacy of our District Attorneys.

This presentation was truly a win for local history. I want to extend my sincere thanks not only to the District Attorneys who attended to see and reflect on their history, but also to all the community members and guests who joined us. Your presence and interest help keep our shared history alive.

The rain and a private Alamo guided tour made for a fantastic day for your Atascosa County Historical Commission!

Yesterday, we were given an excellent Alamo tour by Misty Lanham of The Alamo Staff. During our tour, we had the privilege of seeing The Alamo, the new Ralston Collection Center along with the Phil Collins Collection and their vast collections.

This is a recommended destination for anyone appreciative of their Texas Heritage and for any history enthusiast.

This tour provided us with a deeper understanding of the preservation that we conduct and how important our tie to this history is and always will be.

A special thanks goes to Commissioner George “Butch” Pawelek and Commissioner Mark Gillespie for their unwavering support of this commission and for making this trip possible. Also, want to thank Historical Commission Member Erlinda Huizar for arranging this tour. We truly appreciate AACOG and Alamo Regional Transit for generously providing a bus for our tour. Everyone’s support made a meaningful difference and helped ensure a successful experience.

It’s been a journey to get to this day, and it means so much to celebrate it together. What began as a 2019 project of Lester Reichert ,our very own Texas Ranger Historian finally came to fruition today.

Today we celebrated the service of Texas Ranger John Campbell from 1855-1858. We were excited that a number of his descendants were on hand to witness the solemn ceremony and dedication of the coveted Texas Ranger Cross.

This history is one that we should never dismiss. The contributions of Texas Ranger Campbell set the stage for the future of Atascosa County in more ways than his Texas Ranger service.

Today, we celebrate San Jacinto Day. In 18 minutes, the Mexican Army was routed by The Texans near Buffalo Bayou. This is the battle that awarded Texas its independence from Mexico.
The next day, Mexican President and Military Leader Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna was captured along with his generals.
This would be the final battle of the second Texas Revolution.
