Today, our hearts pause in loving remembrance of Deputy Sheriff Aerl Lee Jernigan, who was taken from his family and his community on this day in 1975 while serving the people of Atascosa County.

Before his service as a deputy sheriff, Aerl proudly served his country in the United States military, including service during the Vietnam War. His life was guided by a strong sense of duty, faith, and service—values he carried into every part of his life.

Beyond the badge and uniform, Aerl was a man of faith. He shared his gift of song as a church singer at Poteet First Baptist Church, lifting others through worship and fellowship. Those who knew him remember not only his courage, but also his kindness, his voice, and the way he served both God and community.

Aerl left behind his beloved wife and two sons, who lost a husband and father far too soon. Today, we honor not only Deputy Jernigan’s sacrifice, but also the enduring love and strength of the family who continues to carry his memory.

Aerl Lee Jernigan will always be remembered—for his service to his country, his community, his church, and his family. He is not forgotten.

With gratitude, reverence, and heartfelt remembrance, we honor you today, Deputy Jernigan.

Always remembered. Always honored.

Throughout history, not very often does a President mention a city from Atascosa County but today President Donald Trump honored several members of the entertainment industry for their lifetime contribution to American Culture. One of the recipients is The King of Country himself George Strait.
In the video below at the 7:00 minute mark, Mr. Trump mentions Poteet, Texas due to it being George Strait’s birthplace.
Thanks to the attention of one of our members Kevin Foster for sharing the clip tonight.

Good morning Atascosa County !! This morning we come to you to ask for help. The Coward Family submitted this wonderful photo. However we cannot identify one of the men in the photo. On the left is Deputy Sheriff “Meister” Coward, in the middle is Sheriff Ray Strickland but we need to identify the man on the right.
The photo had to be taken between January 1951-August 1952 in the County Courthouse
You assistance is greatly appreciated !
