The Graphic Communications course at the Forrest Career and Technology Center is a two-year PrintED certified program offered to grades 10-12. The course incorporates activities in a structured sequence of units that cover the basics of design, typography, desktop publishing, electronic imaging, photography, pre-press, offset printing, Illustration, and careers in the graphic arts. The course intr

oduces the student to the exciting field of graphics and its impact on communication. This course is for students who are either in a college preparatory or technical preparation leading to career placement. PrintED® is national accreditation program set by the Graphic Arts Education and Research Foundation (GAERF®). The program is based on industry standards, for graphic communications courses of study at the secondary and post-secondary levels. It was created in response to the need for skilled entry-level workers in the printing industry. This course is designed to meet the requirements of the PrintED® program.

Course Description

Students learn the fundamentals of computer graphics and image manipulation and explore techniques for adding animation and interactivity to web pages. Students will use graphics editing software to create and manipulate graphic images. Students will also utilize a multimedia platform to create animation, advertisements, and various web page Flash components. In addition, students will explore methods to integrate video into web pages. Students will be exposed to concepts important to information technology professionals working in website development, desktop publishing, photography, publications, and graphic design fields.

Job Description
The Junior Graphic Designer, PT conceives, creates, and manages visual elements for college’s marketing programs that fully integrate a cohesive visual approach throughout all media types using a suite of highly sophisticated software applications. As an integral member of the Creative Services and Marketing departments, the Junior Graphic Designer assists in meeting the marketing needs of the college by creating designs from conception to completion, including layout and design of print publications such as posters, letterhead, brochures, design templates, displays, and multi-media presentations. The position will also support design for web and e-marketing assets.

The work schedule for this part-time position is 30 hours per week, Monday - Friday. Flexibility is required.

College of Southern Maryland conducts background checks in order to ensure the safety and well-being of the college's staff and students. The final candidate for this position will be subject to the following background checks: Criminal History Check.

Required Skills
• AA degree or equivalent in visual design required; or an AA degree and relevant experience
• Demonstrated artistic talent and capability as evidenced by a strong portfolio.
