COMMUNITY HERO: Fire Chief Greg Rightmier Begins His Next Chapter

After nearly three years leading the Lewiston Fire Department, Fire Chief Greg Rightmier is moving on to his next chapter.

Rightmier officially wrapped up his time with the City of Lewiston this week and is heading to Washington to become Fire Chief for Kittitas Valley Fire and Rescue near Ellensburg.

Rightmier joined the Lewiston Fire Department in 2021 as deputy chief, later serving as interim chief before becoming fire chief in 2023.

During his time in Lewiston, Rightmier made a lasting impact on the department and the community through strategic planning, fireground tactics, community engagement and strong relationships with regional partners.

His longtime colleague and Lewiston’s new fire chief, Richie Lucas, says Rightmier was also an important mentor.

“He’s definitely made an impact on our community and our fire department here in Lewiston,” Lucas said. “We’re all going to miss him.”

This week, we’re recognizing Chief Rightmier as our Community Hero and thanking him for his service to Lewiston.

The Mile Marker 320 Fire burning along Highway 95 near Genesee has grown to approximately 250 acres and is now 10% contained, according to the Idaho Department of Lands.

The fire is burning in steep, rugged terrain that has made it difficult for firefighters to directly access portions of the drainage. Because of the challenging conditions, incident commanders are relying heavily on aerial firefighting support.

As of Friday afternoon, the fire was holding on the north side of the drainage. Officials said Highway 95 remains open, but motorists should expect increased traffic and delays in the area as firefighting equipment and personnel travel along the highway.

Approximately 120 personnel are assigned to the incident. Resources include three firefighting crews, six water tenders, seven engines and two scooper planes.

Fire officials continue to monitor the fire's behavior and work to contain its spread while using both ground and aerial resources.

Rural EMS Levy Fails, Asotin County Seeks Contract Extension

The future of rural EMS coverage in parts of Asotin County remains up in the air after voters rejected a six-year EMS levy during the August primary.

The current agreement between Asotin County and the City of Lewiston provides emergency medical crews to communities including Anatone, Cloverland and Heller Bar. That agreement expires at the end of September.

Now, county commissioners are asking Lewiston City Council to extend the contract through the end of the year, giving both sides more time to figure out the next steps.

Asotin County District 1 Commissioner Brian Shinn says the county did not want to commit to another six-year contract without knowing whether voters would approve the funding.

“The voters have the right to say yes or no. And, surprisingly to us, they said no this time.”

Shinn says the decision ultimately comes down to voters and whether they are willing to fund rural ambulance service.

“It’s up to the people. So people vote, and they decide if they’re going to pay that tax and provide for supporting their own ambulance.”

The proposed six-year levy would cost up to 28 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value each year, beginning in 2027.

The levy will return to the ballot for the November 3 general election, according to Commissioner Shinn.

WILDFIRE UPDATE:

A “Ready” evacuation notice is in effect near Lewiston Hill as the Mile Marker 320 Fire burns in the Hatwai Canyon according to the Nez Perce Sheriff’s Office

Idaho Department of Lands estimates the fire at 80 acres and 0% contained, with about 15 structures threatened.

U.S. Highway 95 is partially closed near mile marker 320. About 80 personnel are working the fire, with aircrafts also assisting.

Residents in the affected area should be prepared to evacuate and monitor official alerts for updates.

Woodland Adventures Learning Center says it is hosting its Second Annual Lemonade for a Cause today, Friday, Aug. 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 312 St. John’s Way.

According to the organization, the event will benefit the Lili Cancer Foundation and feature a children-run lemonade stand, mini farmers market with homemade goods and fresh produce, and an art show featuring the children’s summer projects.

The event is part of the center’s Entrepreneur Week, designed to teach children about careers, business, budgeting and marketing.

State Fire Mobilization Authorized for the Alpowa Fire

State fire assistance has been mobilized under the Washington State Fire Services Resource Mobilization Plan in support of local firefighters working to contain the Alpowa Fire located in Asotin County, near Silcott. Washington State Patrol Chief John Batiste authorized the mobilization of state firefighting resources on August 11, 2026, at 8:00 p.m. at the request of Fire Chief Noel Hardin, Asotin County Fire District #1.

Level 3 – GO NOW evacuation is in effect for Westlake Drive due to the wildfire near Highway 12.

Asotin County Emergency Management says Evacuees should head east on Highway 12.

Fire crews are continuing to battle a wildfire along Highway 12 near the Garfield County line, west of Wilson Banner Ranch.

Asotin County Fire, Clarkston Fire, Wheatland Fire and the Garfield County Fire Department are working the fire.

A Helicopters is also helping firefighters by dropping water on the fire. The water is being taken from the Snake River.

Traffic is currently moving through the area one direction at a time as crews work at the scene.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
