This Week in Country Music History.
In 1999, Hank Williams was the subject of the first-ever country music symposium at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. The event, dubbed “A Tribute to Hank Williams,” kicked off with a lineup that could make any Americana fan weep with joy: Lucinda Williams, Kim Richey, Kathy Mattea, and Steve Earle—all belting out Hank’s classics with reverence, grit, and a touch of swagger.
It was more than a concert; it was country music getting its PhD in legend status.
