We aim to advance SOPHIA's mission of using the tools of philosophical inquiry to improve people’s lives & enrich the profession through conversation & community. Welcome to the page for the new, 2017 Philosophy Bakes Bread radio show and podcast. The show first airs on WRFL Lexington, 88.1 FM, and is subsequently released as a podcast. Philosophy Bakes Bread is a production of the Societ
y of Philosophers in America (SOPHIA) and is intended to showcase the public importance of philosophy, both for our everyday lives and for leadership in the policy world. The show originated as a pilot with a handful of episodes that SOPHIA’s Executive Director, Dr. Eric Thomas Weber, tested out between 2015 and 2016. SOPHIA’s mission was redesigned in 2015, at which point we sought to develop a number of avenues for building communities of philosophical conversation. One such effort was to transition this show to become a SOPHIA production on the radio, with co-hosts and interview guests. Dr. Anthony Cashio of the University of Virginia at Wise is our first guest on the show, in our first episode, and thereafter serves as a co-host for the program. Dr. Cashio was recognized with two major awards simultaneously in 2016 at UVA Wise, one issued from students and the other from faculty colleagues. He received the Student Government Association’s Professor of the Year award as well as the faculty nominated Outstanding Teaching Award. Together, Cashio and Weber plan and execute pre-recordings with philosophers around the country via online video conferencing, recording our sessions and integrating listener feedback, including to questions that we pose on the show. Part of the mission of WRFL Lexington is to offer “its listeners a source of music, news, and other programming not regularly found through other media outlets in central Kentucky.” We were very fortunate to be welcomed and encouraged to develop this show. Also, the station will provide the invaluable service of turning the broadcast show into a podcast to which people can subscribe. That technical work is challenging and SOPHIA is very grateful to the staff at WRFL for helping us share our shows both in Lexington and around the interwebs.
