Ruby Bridges turned 71 a few days ago.

When we say her name, most people picture that little Black girl in a white dress, clutching her school supplies, walking through a sea of hatred with U.S. marshals at her side. Six years old. Too young to understand the depth of the hate directed at her. Old enough to feel the sting of it anyway.

Ruby was not just going to school. She was walking into a battlefield. White adults lined the streets to scream at her. They spat at her. They threatened her life. White teachers refused to teach her. White parents pulled their children out of class rather than let them sit beside her. Ruby’s bravery wasn’t abstract. It was survival in the middle of hostility.

We celebrate that moment as history. But history has not stopped.

Black women are still walking into hostile rooms every single day.
We are still the first and the only in boardrooms, in hospitals, in executive suites, in management.
We are still questioned, doubted, silenced, and punished for showing up in our fullness.
We are still asked to carry the weight of representation while fighting to protect our own humanity.

The truth is, Ruby’s story is not just about the 1960s. It is about now. Because the systems that tried to crush a six-year-old Black girl are the same systems that try to exhaust Black women today.

Ruby’s courage was not just a moment frozen in black-and-white photographs. It is a mirror for this generation. It asks us whether we will keep walking forward even when the crowd boos. Whether we will keep showing up even when we are told we do not belong. Whether we will keep holding the door open for those who will come after us.

So today, we celebrate Ruby Bridges.
We celebrate her resilience.
We celebrate her sacrifice.
And we refuse to forget that the fight she carried into that schoolhouse is still alive.

History is not behind us. It is standing right here. In every Black woman who dares to walk into spaces that were not built for us but are better because of us.
