🎮 What If I Told You…

That every time you scream at Call of Duty…
Every time you rage-quit Mario Kart…
Every time your little cousin smacks buttons like they paying rent…

You’re using a Brotha’s invention?

Yes.
A brotha invented the video game cartridge.
And no, they didn’t tell you in school — because history be playing on mute when it comes to Black excellence. 😒

His name was Jerry Lawson.

An engineer.
A visionary.
A real one with glasses and a ’fro who changed the game — literally.

In the 1970s, while everyone was busy playing Pong on a console glued tighter than grandma’s Tupperware, Jerry Lawson said:

“Why not make a system where people can actually switch games out?”

💥 Boom:
The first-ever video game cartridge system — the Fairchild Channel F — was born.

Before Nintendo.
Before Sega.
Before that dusty PS2 still hiding in your closet.

Jerry. Did. That.

🕹️ And guess what?

He didn’t just make it work.
He opened the entire future of gaming:

💾 Save files.
🎮 Game libraries.
👾 Swappable cartridges.
📈 Console gaming as an industry.

WITHOUT HIM?
Your favorite streamer would be a librarian.
You’d be watching TV instead of talking trash on Fortnite.
And that one friend who still thinks they’re “elite” at FIFA? Unemployed. 😂

They called him the “father of modern gaming.”
But they barely mention his name.

Because Jerry Lawson was Black —
and history loves the product,
but forgets the producer.

But not anymore.

If you grew up on cartridges, consoles, or chaos:
🕹️ DM this to that friend who swears they invented gaming.
🎮 Drop it in your Discord.
📩 Slide it in your Gen Z cousin’s inbox like “Bet you didn’t know this.”

And go ahead and follow the page — ’cause we stay loading up truth like a classic cartridge.

🍦 Ever had vanilla ice cream and wondered who made it possible?

Not who sold it.
Not who bottled the extract.
But who figured out how to grow vanilla outside of Mexico — where the native pollinating bees don’t exist?

Because that person…
was a 12-year-old enslaved Black boy.

📍The year was 1841. The place? Réunion Island, a French colony in the Indian Ocean.
His name was Edmond Albius.

French colonists had imported vanilla plants from Mexico — but couldn’t figure out how to make them bear fruit.

Vanilla orchids bloom for only a few hours, and in Mexico, it’s a special bee that naturally pollinates them.

On Réunion?
No bee. No pollination. No vanilla.

Botanists tried. Plantation owners tried. They failed.
Until Edmond stepped in.

🧠 At just 12 years old, with no formal education and no freedom, Edmond discovered a method using a thin stick and his thumb.
He gently lifted the orchid’s flap, pressed its reproductive parts together — and pollinated the flower by hand.

It was brilliant. Fast. And it worked.

Suddenly, vanilla could grow on Réunion. On Madagascar. Across the tropics.
And to this day, most of the vanilla we use around the world is pollinated using Edmond’s method.

Yet while vanilla became a billion-dollar industry, Edmond Albius never saw fame or fortune.
No statues.
No reward.
He died in poverty, his genius largely ignored.

But every time you taste vanilla — in ice cream, cake, perfume, or your morning latte — you taste the legacy of a young Black boy who changed agriculture forever with a flick of his thumb and the courage to try.

📚 They may not have written his name in every textbook —
But we can speak it now.

For Trump, a military conflict with Iran would distract from:

-Sinking poll numbers
-A devastating (and unpopular) budget bill
-Harmful trade wars
-Unleashing the military on American soil
-Millions of people protesting his authoritarianism

We must remain on high alert. [Cartoon by Adam Zyglis]
