A federal judge in Tennessee on Friday temporarily halted the state’s new law that criminalizes some drag performances, hours before it was set to take effect.

NOTE: When having a conflict between citizens and a state, commonwealth, or territory, the federal government is often the mediator.

Judge Thomas Parker cited constitutional protections of freedom of speech in issuing a temporary restraining order.

“If Tennessee wishes to exercise its police power in restricting speech it considers obscene, it must do so within the constraints and framework of the United States Constitution,” Parker wrote.

“The Court finds that, as it stands, the record here suggests that when the legislature passed this Statute, it missed the mark,” he wrote.

Governor Bill Lee, a Republican, signed the novel bill into law March 2. It was set to effect Saturday.

The first-of-its-kind law bans “adult cabaret entertainment” on public property or in locations where it could be viewed by a minor.

The law has sometimes been referred to as a drag ban.

"It's OK to fire someone if they're gay. Historically, homosexuals haven't suffered. Obviously, people can change their sexual orientation, some psychologists have said so."- Kentucky Representative Joseph Fischer Kentucky House of Representatives (1999 - Present)

** It is amazing that we continue to vote for people like this. Read everything below. How is the Representative still in office?**

"It's OK to fire someone if they're gay. Historically, homosexuals haven't suffered. Obviously, people can change their sexual orientation, some psychologists have said so."- Kentucky Representative Joseph Fischer Kentucky House of Representatives (1999 - Present)

This drew an immediate response from Kentucky Equality Federation during the forum. "As far as people being able to change their sexual orientation, it's something you are born with," said Federation Secretary-General Col. Jordan Palmer. "You seem to think you can change it with the proper amount of psychology. So, my question to you is, can you be homosexual for 24 hours and I'll be heterosexual? Is it that easy? Come on, let's do this together."

"I'd like Representative Fischer to provide us with a number of exactly how many people need to suffer before he will acknowledge it," Palmer said.

Fischer declined Palmer's challenge.

The political ideology in Frankfort, Kentucky will change drastically when the Kentucky House and Senate convene in January. The LGBTI community, Women, and other minority groups will continue to fight for equality and inclusiveness.

Kentucky Equality Federation invites the new members of the Kentucky Senate and the Kentucky House of Representatives to join us. Our community has endured; it will continue to endure long after the terms of those who will assume office have ended.

As we had so many times in the past, we will continue to overcome obstacles placed in our path. We will not be silenced, and we will not accept whatever legislative agendas our elected officials attempt to force upon us should they violate anyone’s civil liberties.

This is OUR future. Our commonwealth!

Oh, and would someone PLEASE tell Governor Matt Bevin that he stole my saying "We ARE Kentucky!? I've been using that on and off since 2010, especially during the so-called Kentucky Religious Freedom Act, effectively nullifying city local ordinances."

- "With so many Kentuckians worried about an uncertain future as well as their physical safety given the hateful attacks against the LGBTI (le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex) community, women, and many others from political candidates who have now been elected, we do not blame them. But we must remember that our work has never ended.

: Kentucky Supreme Court recognizes tenant rights. Landlord's may no longer evict people prematurely. In 2015-SC-000039-DG, the Supreme Court of Kentucky held that landlords must give tenants proper notice to vacate and landlords may not file their forcible detainer (or eviction) complaint until the vacate date has passed. Until the notice period has passed, the tenant is in lawful possession of the property and a prematurely filed forcible detainer complaint must be dismissed.

"As required by KRS 383.195, a landlord must give the tenant at least one month's written notice to vacate, and until that period expires, no forcible detainer is being committed. The complaint filed prior to the existence of the cause of action should have been dismissed pursuant to the motion properly raising the issue.

We cannot fail to note that the current statutory scheme for forcible entry and detainer as described above originated many, many decades ago and has arguably become ill-suited and impractical for application to modern property practices. The statutory procedure for the adjudication of forcible entry and detainer issues is ill-suited to the modern court system.

The courts, however, are not at liberty to circumvent or evade the statutory language by turning a blind eye to the statutory requirements for the sake of expedience. Consequently, we cannot sanction procedural improvisations such as the one employed here to mitigate the effect of the one-month notice provision."
