After 10 hours in labor, Kimberly Anderson of Lexington gave birth in the early evening of May 15 to a nearly 8-pound baby girl. She named the child Freyja, a name derived from Norse mythology’s powerful goddess of love, beauty, fertility, war and magic.

Anderson, who became sober when she found out she was pregnant, thanks a local treatment program for pregnant women and new moms with helping her stay sober. The program, Maternal Outreach Management Services, was established by the Midlands nonprofit LRADAC in 2014 to help reduce the number of children born with alcohol or drugs in their system.

On a humid early evening in October 2024, Robert Barrs was crossing an unlit portion of Highway 178, a few miles south of Pelion, when a car struck him. The driver fled, leaving the man’s body in the middle of the roadway.

Surveillance video showed dozens of other vehicles had driven past Barrs — including several that had also hit him — before someone called 911.
