On May 2nd, 1970, Diane Crump, a 21-year-old from Oldsmar, Florida, was the first female rider in the Kentucky Derby. She was called the 'Darling of the Derby.'

Late in life, Crump's mottos were literally tattooed on her forearms: "Kindness" on the left, "Compassion" on the right. She passed away on January 1st of this year, but her legacy remains.

Happy Derby, Kentucky!
