Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass “Warm” 1969 A&M Records - This album is almost as if Alpert gave himself the A&M/CTI treatment from those often brilliant releases (without Creed Taylor). It leans towards the Brazilian in sound. And Alpert’s vocal version of Nilsson’s “Without Her,” is amongst the best covers of that song. Late sixties TJB!

Bobbie Gentry “Patchwork” 1971 Capitol Records - Gentry’s last album was a stunning affair featuring a strong slate of self-penned gems. The record tanked upon release, but like the rest of her catalog, it’s ripe for rediscovery.

Spike Jones “In Hi-Fi: A Spooktacular in Screaming Sound!” 1959 Warner Bros. Records - An album of songs and skits that are very much of their time. It’s actually a funny record, in a completely corny way. It also has a great album cover. Interestingly, the album was produced by guitarist, Alvino Rey.

The Autumn Defense “Here and Nowhere” 2025 Yep Roc Records - A few observations: 1. It’s a great year for Wilco side projects. Not only do we have the very solid triple-play of Jeff Tweedy’s “Twilight Override,” but we have the gnarly jazz of Nels Cline’s epic “Consentrik Quartet,” and the lush chill of Pat Sansone and John Stirratt’s Autumn Defense. 2. Yep Roc Records is having a stellar year with five-star releases by The Autumn Defense, Los Straitjackets, The Third Mind and Sloan.

Little Feat “The Last Record Album - Deluxe” 1975/2025 Rhino/Warner Records - A worthy album of the super deluxe treatment. This comes with a disc of outtakes and alternates, and a double disc live concert from The Orpheum Theater in Boston on Halloween 1975. This also came with a bonus fifth disc from ordering direct from Rhino, recorded live in England from 1975.

Garland Jeffreys “Ghost Writer” 1977 A&M Records - Four years lapsed between this album and its predecessor. In that time, Jeffreys managed one of his strongest efforts including four classics; “I May Not Be Your Kind,” “Spanish Town,” “Cool Down Boy,” and “Wild In The Streets.”

June Christy “Something Cool” 1955 Capitol Records - This is the original mono version of Christy’s debut solo album. In 1960, they re-recorded the album in stereo and that was the version that remained in print, making this one the rarer of the two. Mono or stereo, this album is a chill classic featuring sympathetic arrangements by Pete Rugulo.

Sloan “Based on a Best Seller” 2025 Two Minutes For Music/Yep Roc Records - Canadian power pop of the highest order. For over its 30 years, this band has kept on getting greater.

Hot Butter “Popcorn” 1972 Musicor Records - The title track is a cover of a 1969 Gershon Kingsley electronic instrumental. The rest is all butter.

Blue Oyster Cult “Agents Of Fortune” 1976 Columbia Records - Notable for its two hit singles, “This Ain’t The Summer of Love” and “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper,” and a co-write and cameo for Patti Smith on “The Revenge of Vera Gemini.” I haven’t heard this one in a least 30 years.

Robert Plant with Suzy Dian “Saving Grace” 2025 Nonesuch Records - Between this release and the latest by The Third Mind, ‘tis the season for reviving ancient folk classics. The vocals of ex-music teacher, Suzy Dian add a sweet counterpoint to Plant’s hushed, rough vocals in this consistently rewarding album. Hard to believe that this is the same guy that howled at the top of Led Zep’s “The Immigrants Song.”
