Lynyrd Skynyrd “(pronounced leh-nerd’ skin-nerd)” 1973 MCA/Sounds of the South Records - How can this album still sound fresh after all these years? Heartfelt musicianship, superb vocals, great songs, and Al Kooper at the production reins. That’s how.

Doc Pomus “Viva Doc Pomus: Songs For Elvis (The Demos)” 2025 Omnivore Recordings - Much like the Glen Campbell collection of demos for Elvis, here are demos for Elvis by one of his greatest songwriters. Mort Shuman supplies many of the vocals. Definitely my favorite, and most-played of the spring RSD 2025 releases.

Ian Hunter “Overnight Angels” 1977 CBS Records UK - Hunter’s third album was a much harder rocking affair than its predecessor, “All American Alien Boy,” featuring Earl Slick on guitar. But due to poor sales of that album and management issues, Columbia Records refused to release this album in the U.S. and dropped him from the label, making this record the great lost Ian Hunter album on these shores.

Ellen Foley “Spirit Of St. Louis” 1981 Cleveland International/Epic Records - Produced by Mick Jones of The Clash on the heels of their album, “Sandinista.” Foley is backed by the band on a set of songs also mostly written by the band.

Carlene Carter “Musical Shapes” 1980 Warner Bros. Records - Carter was married to Nick Lowe when this album was recorded, which is why most of Rockpile are present. A nice melding of country and rock ‘n’ roll, with a new wave sensibility.

Grateful Dead “Playing In The Band” 2018 Rhino/Grateful Dead Records - This album holds the longest live version of “Playing In The Band,” clocking in at 46:24, as recorded in Seattle on 5/21/74. The song was Donna Jean Godchaux’s centerpiece for howling, both great and grate. Donna Jean Godchaux R.I.P.

The Velvet Underground “Live MCMXCIII” There was a time when the world of rock music in America held out the hope that The Velvet Underground would tour the states. Sadly egos got in the way. Reissued for Record Store Day 2014 on vinyl for the first time.

John Allison “Witches and War Whoops” 1962 Filkways Records - Not really a Halloween album, but I do keep this filed under Halloween. The songs aren’t nearly as creepy as the album graphics.

Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass “Warm” 1969 A&M Records - This album is almost as if Alpert gave himself the A&M/CTI treatment from those often brilliant releases (without Creed Taylor). It leans towards the Brazilian in sound. And Alpert’s vocal version of Nilsson’s “Without Her,” is amongst the best covers of that song. Late sixties TJB!

Bobbie Gentry “Patchwork” 1971 Capitol Records - Gentry’s last album was a stunning affair featuring a strong slate of self-penned gems. The record tanked upon release, but like the rest of her catalog, it’s ripe for rediscovery.

Spike Jones “In Hi-Fi: A Spooktacular in Screaming Sound!” 1959 Warner Bros. Records - An album of songs and skits that are very much of their time. It’s actually a funny record, in a completely corny way. It also has a great album cover. Interestingly, the album was produced by guitarist, Alvino Rey.
