Alakoko Shop will take a Creative Break from Aug 20 – Nov 14 so our makers can hōʻomaha (rest) and ho‘oulu (grow) — like the ‘āina, which needs time to renew before it bears hua (fruit).

Shop now, kōkua our makers, and get makana (gifts) or fill your hale with mea nani (beautiful things) before we pause. We’ll re-open November 15th for the holidays with even more aloha to share. ✨

Kindly asking for $1 and a share.

If you believe in saving space for artist and makers please read.

A maker is often an integral part of the community. Their entire business practice is based on the ethics of promoting local jobs and utilizing local resources in a sustainable manner. They truly care about the product or service they provide and the impacts their actions have on others. When you live on an island those actions are magnified.

When someone shops they are conditioned to ask to pay less. Can we have a discount? If I buy 2 can I get one free?

On the other hand when someone orders food it’s frowned upon to immediately negotiate the price or ask for something free. In fact most people are so conditioned to value food service that many leave a tip for someone simply taking their order at a window. If you’re getting sit down service it’s “customary” to leave 20%…yet so many people still leave 10-20% tip for to-go food orders.

A maker or retail associate could spend 30 minutes with a customer to help them understand each product and decide on what fits their need. On top of that the maker may have spent an hour or multiple hours on the product which was marked at a fair price. Yet we are conditioned to value this experience by asking to pay less 🥺

If we don’t find a way to rewrite this our local makers will fade. This is why we see so few weavers and carvers on Kaua’i. Culture and craft are intertwined. We supported a value system that didn’t include their existence. Help us include more spaces for our makers that allow them to be valued amongst our community.

Please help us bring awareness and save our Alakoko space for makers. Humbly ask for a $1 donation and share of this post.

Help Alakoko reach their goal by donating or sharing with your friends.
