Hōʻike Kauaʻi Community Media Kauai's Public, Education, & Government Access organization offering video production training Residents may also submit self-produced programming for airing.

Hō‘ike provides a number of opportunities for residents of Kaua‘i to be seen and heard on Hō‘ike's public access channel 54. Residents can share a message every Tuesday with open mic and community cameras. Hō‘ike provides classes in production from start to finish, and Hō‘ike certified producers have the added benefit of being able to use Hō‘ike's cameras and editing equipment to produce shows to air on the channel.

We’re back! 💛

Hōʻike Kauaʻi has reopened and power has been restored to our office. Mahalo for your patience while our team worked through the impacts of Hurricane Lowell alongside the rest of our community.

Recovery continues across Kauaʻi. Beginning Monday, September 15, resource centers will be open at the Hanalei Neighborhood Center and Kōloa Neighborhood Center from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Please continue to check on your ʻohana, friends and neighbors, and stay connected with official County and emergency management channels for the latest recovery information.

We’re grateful to be back serving our community. Kauaʻi has been through a lot this week, but we’re getting through it together. 🤙🏽

Kauaʻi is still in recovery mode, and while Hōʻike remains without power, our team is continuing to document what’s happening across the island and share resources when we can.

Food distributions are happening in multiple communities, including one happening tomorrow morning from 8 until pau with our neighbors at Hale Līhuʻe Hale Līhuʻe by RSBA at the Kauaʻi Convention Center parking lot.

For the most up-to-date food distribution locations and times, follow Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i.

We’ll keep sharing what we can as Kauaʻi continues to recover. 💛

Following Hurricane Lowell, Hōʻike Kauaʻi Community Television’s studio and offices remain closed as widespread power outages continue across the island.

Our team is still working behind the scenes where we can, and our DMs remain open for community updates, questions, and information. However, with our facilities still without power, our ability to produce and share timely coverage is limited.

As recovery efforts continue, we encourage everyone to follow official information from the County of Kauaʻi, Kauaʻi Emergency Management Agency, National Weather Service, KIUC, and other local authorities as best you can. If internet or cell service is limited, check local radio and other available emergency information sources.

Please continue to use caution around downed power lines, damaged roads, flooding, and other storm-related hazards.

We’ll continue sharing verified information and community updates whenever we’re able.

As Hurricane Lowell approaches, conditions across Kauaʻi are expected to deteriorate through this afternoon and evening. County officials are urging residents to complete preparations, stay off the roads when possible, and shelter in a safe location.

HURRICANE LOWELL UPDATE | SUNDAY, SEPT. 6

The County of Kauaʻi announced that all County parks and campgrounds will close at 5 p.m. today, Sunday, Sept. 6, as the island prepares for potential impacts from Hurricane Lowell. The County, in partnership with the American Red Cross, will also open five refuge areas beginning at 5 p.m.

The refuge areas are:

• Kīlauea Neighborhood Center — 2460 Keneke Street, Kīlauea
• Kapaʻa Middle School — 4867 Olohena Road, Kapaʻa
• Kauaʻi High School Gym — 3577 Lala Road, Līhuʻe
• Kalāheo Neighborhood Center — 4480 Papalina Road, Kalāheo
• Waimea Canyon Middle School — 9555 Huakai Road, Waimea

County officials are urging residents in coastal, low-lying and flood-prone areas to be prepared to evacuate and to avoid waiting until conditions deteriorate before moving. Flooding, debris and downed power lines could make roadways impassable once storm conditions arrive.

Kauaʻi Emergency Management Agency officials emphasize that refuge areas are an evacuation option of last resort. Residents whose homes are sound or hardened and located outside flood and storm-surge areas may be safer sheltering in place.

Those who do use a refuge area should bring their own disaster supply kit, including food, water, medications, bedding and other essential items needed to remain self-sufficient for several days. Refuge areas do not provide food, water, bedding, medical staff or personal caregivers.

Household pets are welcome at the designated refuge areas, but owners must bring their own pet food, water and crates or cages.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to continue monitoring official updates from the County of Kauaʻi and KEMA.

“We deserve to have nice things.”

For Councilmember Fern Holland, building a better future for Kauaʻi means making sure the next generation has opportunities, safe community spaces, healthy natural places, and a home they can continue to be proud of.

From our native forests and waterfalls to something as simple as usable bathrooms in our county parks, Fern says our community deserves investment in the places we all share.

On Kauaʻi Unscripted, Councilmember Fern Holland talks about the value of having hard conversations, listening to people who see things differently, and finding common humanity even when we don’t agree.

“I need you to disagree with me… because there’s stuff I’m gonna miss.”

For Fern, better decisions don’t come from surrounding yourself with people who always say yes. They come from making room at the table for different perspectives.

A little behind the scenes of what community media can look like 🎬💛

At Hō‘ike, it’s not just about creating a finished video — it’s about creating opportunities for young people to step onto a set, be part of the process, and see what goes into telling stories through media.

We had such a fun time collaborating with Hawai‘i Children’s Theatre and giving these young creatives a chance to experience a real production from both sides of the camera.
