SHOW YOUR LOVE! 10 Years Ago Today, the mighty Rod Temperton transitioned after succumbing to a brief battle with an aggressive cancer. He deserves a massive wave of recognition for his amazing musical contributions.
He served as the keyboardist and songwriter for the legendary Heatwave writing many hits for them including Star of a Story, Always and Forever, Boogie Nights, and The Groove Line. He was then recruited by Quincy Jones, where he wrote hits for Michael Jackson including Thriller, Off the Wall, and Rock with You. Not to mention George Benson's Give Me the Night, Love X Love and so many others. You better recognize.

ANYONE ELSE? 30 Years Ago Today, the Legendary Roots Crew (aka The Roots) released one of the greatest hip hop records on the planet in the form of Illadelph Halflife. It is by far in my top 5 hip hop albums of all time. So this post is more for me than anyone else. I HAVE to give this album its flowers, and ESPECIALLY on such a historic 30th anniversary.

Questlove is notorious for identifying some of the greatest artists and giving them shine when most of the world is clueless. Featuring the inimitable flow of Black Thought to the incomparable Dice Raw, Common, and Q-Tip. Plus the unmistakable flow of Raphael Saddiq, Cassandra Wilson, and even D'Angelo, this album might of well have come with a fuse and a match because it is an explosion.

Years ago, on one of Jimmy Fallon’s late night shows, Black Thought was asked if he would ever like to redo an album again. Not because it needed editing or changes, but to do a 2.0. And when Illadelph Halflife left his lips, I immediately jumped up yelling, " YES! YES! YES!" and paced the room. That's how much I love this album.

It's not rap for the sake of bars. It's at the intersection of flow and vibe. And somewhere between the unreal production and thump on tracks like Push Up Ya Lighter and Universe At War, all the way down to the cushy cottonmouth hayride of The Hypnotic, this isn't music. It's friggjng hip hop history. Here's to 30 years of this masterpiece.

NAME THAT FAVORITE TRACK! 35 Years Ago (if you can believe it), the Red Hot Chili Peppers dropped Blood Sugar S*x Magik. This album was PACKED full of radio hits where they seemingly could do no wrong. Between Breaking the Girl, Give It Away, Suck My Kiss, Under the Bridge, and more, they were on a raging funk-rock roll.

The album featured the fingerprints of famed producer Rick Rubin who had previously declined to work with the band on the The Uplift M**o Party Plan album in 1987 due to the bands incessant drug use. Specifically, lead singer Anthiny Keidis and guitarist Hillel Slovak, of which the latter would die from a heroine overdose.

Rubin made sure that they band stayed inspired by having them record at the legendary magician Harry Houdini's old mansion. The result was pure Magik.

The same album that gave the world Get Down on It which was released onto the planet and now serves as a party starter at every cookout, wedding reception, and roller rink within a 20 mile radius of wherever you are.

NAME THAT FAVORITE TRACK! 49 Years Ago Today, the illustrious Steely Dan released their legendary album Aja. While it only featured 7 tracks, 5 of them became radio hits leading it to become one of the most celebrated albums of all-time.

The dynamic duo of Donald Fagen and the late Walter Becker migrated into a studio band for this release bringing in a wave of session musicians to contribute their unique styles to perfectly craft each track featuring musical icons ranging from Steve Gadd, Victor Feldman, Wayne Shorter, Lee Ritenour, Joe Sample, Michael McDonald, Bernard Purdie, and many others.

While it's not resting in the funk genre, the roots are there and very simply, this is one of those albums that can't be ignored and deserves any praise it can get.

WHAT DO U WANT ME TO ADDRESS? Just an FYI, that while I will be doing a DJ set online tonight at 6pm EST, I will start with a little mini-Funkatopia Live to discuss a handful of things that probably should be mentioned. Folks have been blowing up my phone and DM's asking me to address some things, so...ok. Plus, I just want to make up for the lack of a show last night. With Michael being out and I was feeling some sort of way, we just paused again. Not a whole bunch of new developments beyond the standard stuff people are chatting about. And still angry about. Wednesday is not our typical day, but you deserve it. See you tonight.
