Sunday-Funday Hummer Charm!! Have you ever seen a mostly brown immature Ruby-throated male? I had not either until yesterday. I noticed a really dark hummingbird on one of my feeders and wasn’t sure what I was looking at. I snapped a few pictures. When he flew off to the next feeder I saw a small flash of red on his throat. His wings were also shorter than his tail. For sure a Ruby-throated of a different color. These are the only photos I got. Close inspection of my photos show he has a few lime green feathers. He could possibly have a condition called “melanism” which causes him to look darker. Melanism is opposite of leucism which causes white patches or an all white hummingbird. I did not see him again. He was definitely just stopping by for a one time fuel up. Keep an eye on your feeders everyone. You never know what you will see next. Maybe a white one!!! Wouldn’t that be something!!! Howdy Hummer Charm! It’s a beautiful low humidity day in South Texas making for a very pleasant day to be outside. We’ve been learning about threats to hummingbirds like climate change, global warming and predators. There is a silent, invisible threat that many don’t even think about. Hummingbirds are especially vulnerable to Pesticides. They can ingest toxic nectar impairing a hummingbirds memory, reduce the amount of tiny insects the hummingbirds consume for protein and can even cause death. There have been many detailed studies especially in Canada about the effects of pesticides on hummingbirds. Ways to protect hummingbirds are by reducing or eliminating the use of pesticides in your yard. Research non-chemical w**d and pest control methods. You can also learn about the Saving America’s Pollinators Act (SAPA) and urge your representatives to support this act. Read about tips on how to create a pollinator friendly backyard. My backyard is chemical free. I don’t even like spraying myself for mosquitoes then going into the backyard. If there’s absolutely no way around it, don’t spray near nectar producing flowers or on a windy day. Let’s keep our beauties as safe and chemical free as possible. Have a great Saturday everyone.😎😎

I live in Central Oklahoma. I put 5 feeders up this yr. We went through 80 lbs of sugar. We have never had so many birds. We planted lots of Zinnia, red Salvia, 3 bird baths and 2 hanging water bowls. This was in September.

Their little home/habitat changes some from year to year. All winter I plan the next year's play ground, it's my passion.
The water feature, was so simple, finding the rite pieces was the hard part. I thrifted them from an antique store going out of business,1 dollar a piece. The pedestal and bowl are heavy crystal, the pedestal is a light fixture, the bottom base is a glass picture frame, all of which are only stacked, not glued.
The top pieces are glued. It was a glass chandelier that was broken, I gave a dollar for it took it apart, and had enough pieces to make 2. The holes were just too big to guide the straw so I glued metal washers inside the three pieces .
I use a solar pump, the straw fits perfectly in the center and the larger bowl on the bottom keeps it stable. When the water level is rite, it gives the birds a spot to rest. The bowls are textured so they have a little grip.
It all come together pretty well, but I worked all summer trying to find the rite pieces. I added a lot of glass to the garden this year, an old flower vase and a bowl will make some cool mushrooms.
Including the water pump, I have less than 20 dollars in this feature, and enough for another maybe, not as pretty tho.
It's so easy and the birds love it, they were the whole reason it was created.
