It begins before the sun rises and usually ends long after the sun has set.
Trucks pull in, doors slam shut, the birds are chirping and the smell of coffee fills the air.

Same crew as last year, give or take a few.
A few old-timers who don’t say much and have seen it all; stand back and watch the young hands they taught so many years ago begin to take over.
Friends who don’t have to be here - they just show up, because that’s what folks do out here.
Kids running in the alley, learning by watching.

Everyone’s doing their job.
The ropers rope.
The branders brand.
The wrestlers wrestle.
And behind the scenes, there’s a few mommas and grandmas back at the house - making sure there’s something ready to eat; feeding everyone like their own.

You do this work long enough and you’ll learn:
It’s not always this smooth.
There will be years where grass don’t grow and calves won’t come easy.
There will be days you’re short on sleep, patience and help.
Good stock will be lost and old horses will be buried.

Time will test.

But then mornings like this will come around and all those hard days will be worth it.

What might seem like the middle of nowhere to some, it’s the middle of somewhere to them.
