Artist Wendy Bantam created a mural at 27th and T streets in Lincoln, NE that celebrates the Asian community. “Art is a reflection of a culture,” Bantam said. With its lotus flowers, bamboo and elephants, the mural remains a testament to Asian immigrants and refugees and a reminder of home. The struggle of fitting in to a new culture can be difficult for refugees, but these young Yazidi girls express themselves through dance. The type of dance doesn’t really matter – it’s the self-expression and the empowerment that are important, says instructor Adoul Khalaf, who runs the weekly program called “Dance Away.” See their amazing moves in the Nebraska Mosaic video story by Alyssa Olvera.

Farah Alsebaie had no interest in creating art until she moved to America nearly two years ago. Now the 20-year-old from Syria relies on art to get through the ups and downs of life. When drawing for fun one day, a friend pointed out that Alsebaie had a knack for art. Since then, she has experimented with drawing, painting and eventually taught herself embroidery, which is now her focus. She uses thread and canvas to design flowers, cityscapes and even quotes in her native language, Arabic. Alsebaie's story is part of our upcoming project "New Americans and Their Art" which features refugees in the Lincoln area who are using art to express themselves. Tut Kailech is a 25-year-old South Sudanese refugee who makes music in Lincoln, Nebraska. He’s known by his artist name, K1ng T or K1ng Tut. “The music that I make is uplifting, kind of upbeat happy music and also self-reflecting music,” he said. to the old Saigon Plaza. Who remembers this location on 27th street, before the area was revitalized? Thuy Nguyen, a Vietnamese refugee, opened Little Saigon Asian Grocery Store in 1992 and the plaza has continued growing ever since.

Tin Htay, 19, is a refugee from Thailand. For her, dancing is more than a form of exercise or entertainment. Dancing is an art form that serves as a way for her to learn about her background and spread her culture to others.

Idigima is 21-year-old Nigerian refugee who runs her own photography business in Lincoln, Nebraska. “I do it because I love creating art,” Idigima said. “To think about something in your mind and to be able to recreate it out in reality is a thrill.”
