Crypto Scams Surge in Lincoln: Losses Top $2.7 Million in 2026

Lincoln, Neb. – After a promising start to 2026 with relatively few cryptocurrency scams reported, losses have skyrocketed due to a handful of high-dollar cases.

According to the Lincoln Police Department, the city recorded just 16 scam reports in the first quarter, totaling $284,169 in losses. That figure has now climbed to 37 cases with more than $2.7 million stolen so far this year. Three incidents reported in May alone account for over $2.3 million — roughly 85% of the year-to-date total.

The large cases include:

-A 77-year-old Lincoln man who lost more than $1.4 million in Bitcoin to an illegitimate online business between October 2025 and April 2026 (Case C6-039184).

-A 63-year-old Lincoln man who invested over $483,000 in a crypto scam from January to May 2026 (Case C6-036839).

-A 52-year-old Lincoln man who sent more than $422,000 to a scammer during an online relationship between January and April 2026 (Case C6-042493).

Despite the recent spike, Lincoln remains behind 2025’s pace. Last year, the city saw 69 cases and more than $3.5 million in losses during the first five months.

Authorities say many of these schemes are “pig butchering” investment frauds, in which scammers build trust over time before convincing victims to send cryptocurrency. Older adults and those experiencing isolation appear especially vulnerable.

“If it’s too good to be true, it likely is,” police warn. “If someone promises a large return in a short amount of time, be skeptical.

”To avoid falling victim, the Lincoln Police Department recommends using the acronym SCAM:STOP — Don’t act on fear, threats, or urgency.

CHECK — Independently verify anyone contacting you.
AVOID — If pressured, do not send crypto.
MAKE A REPORT — Call LPD at 402-441-6000.

Residents are encouraged to talk with family members and loved ones about these risks. More information on cryptocurrency scams and reporting resources is available at lincoln.ne.gov/Police/Resources/Scams.
