I did a post recently about spam (if you haven’t read it yet, go check it out.) It was all about the difference between promoting your business and spamming in Facebook groups.

One gentleman commented something to the effect of:
ā€œIn 17 years, I’ve never once posted about my business in any public Facebook group, and I’ve been very successful. Social media advertising in groups just wasn’t needed for me.ā€

And honestly, I loved that.

By the time I went to respond, the comment had already been deleted. But if you happen to see this, I want you to know how much I appreciated what you said. It was such an important reminder.

The truth is, not every business is meant to promote in Facebook groups. And that’s okay.

Facebook groups can be a great tool when used with the right intention. But for some businesses, they just aren’t the right fit. And forcing it can actually do more harm than good.

In over 10 years of running my business, I’ve only had two clients directly come from social media groups. Yep, you read that right, only 2. But what I have gained from being online is the chance to showcase my work. That alone has started conversations, built relationships, and helped me stay visible to people I might never have met otherwise.

Sometimes, that’s the real win.

So if you’re a business owner who feels like group posting isn’t working for you, or maybe it’s never felt natural in the first place, you’re not doing anything wrong. There are other ways to grow. And that one comment was the perfect reminder that success doesn’t have to look the same for everyone.

Promoting your business in Facebook groups ≠ Spamming... but only if you know the difference.

I get this question all the time — especially from small business owners just trying to get the word out about what they do.

Here’s the thing: there’s a right way to promote, and then there’s the fast-track to getting blocked, reported, or ghosted. Let’s break it down.

āœ… DOs (Promoting the right way):
• Read the group rules before posting (yes, every time)
• Offer value before you pitch — be helpful, answer questions, share insight
• Ask for permission before promoting if the group isn’t clear
• Use story-based or educational posts that build trust
• Follow posting limits and schedules (some groups have a promo day!)

āŒ DON’Ts (What counts as spam):
• Copy/pasting the same message across 10 groups
• Posting only links, flyers, or ads without context
• Dropping your business in every comment thread
• Posting too frequently with no engagement
• Ignoring the rules and assuming ā€œadmins are just being strictā€

If you’ve ever wondered why your posts aren’t getting engagement… or worse, why you’ve been removed or blocked — this might be the reason.

How Often is Too Often? Avoiding Over-Saturation in Marketing

If you’re posting every single day (or worse, multiple times a day) without bringing real value, you might be over-saturating your audience. And trust me, people notice.

Here’s the deal:

It’s not just about being consistent, it’s about being intentional. Sure, you’ve got to stay on your audience’s radar, but bombarding them with content can actually push them away. The goal isn’t just to be seen—the goal is to make every post count.

So, how do you find the balance?

• Quality Over Quantity: Stop thinking you need to be everywhere, all the time. A few value-packed posts are way better than constant noise.
• Engage, Don’t Overwhelm: If you’re posting daily, make sure it’s something your audience actually wants. Are they getting helpful tips, valuable insights, or just more sales pitches?
• Check Your Analytics: If your engagement is dropping while your posting frequency is up, that’s a red flag. Pay attention to what works and dial back when needed.
