The hand stitching, uneven brush strokes, and the attention to detail. The slight imperfections that prove it was handmade with love… and the reason to love folk art!

That is exactly why we love sharing the stories of artisans and makers inside A Primitive Place Magazine. Behind every handcrafted piece is a person keeping history, tradition, and creativity alive. Angela Hillstrom was the featured artisan in our latest issue, and for good reason! ā¤ļø

Since the 250 Years of Independence issue was photographed, collections have already continued growing! Brenda Hutto ā€œcouldn’t resist herselfā€ when she came across the patriotic parade costumes alongside both a 1976 Bicentennial doll and a rarer 1926 Sesquicentennial doll.

These patriotic costumes reflect how Americans historically used pageantry, parades, school programs, and civic celebrations to honor major anniversaries of the nation’s independence. Pieces like these became especially popular during the 1926 Sesquicentennial and 1976 Bicentennial, when patriotic dress and Americana symbolism saw a major revival across the country.

The 1926 doll is the more unusual find. That makes it especially interesting historically because the 1926 Sesquicentennial celebration in Philadelphia was a major national event, but far fewer souvenirs survived compared to 1976 Bicentennial material.

She remembers the Bicentennial with remarkable clarity, and now, being featured in a magazine dedicated to the Semiquincentennial, her patriotism is at an all-time high.

To see more patriotic collections, historic Americana, and stories like these, be sure to get your copy of our special edition before we run out!
