In 1979, I bought my first parcel of farmland. It was near Tribune, and I was a proud new landowner.

These were modern, best-we-can versions of old clothes that identified a people. The Swedish costumes help tell the story of the pioneers of Smoky Valley. Elmquist said of talk about clothes, “It’s a conversation that draws everyone in.”

Marla Elmquist has a green skirt and jacket based on the clothes from where her father’s ancestors lived, in Sweden, more than a century ago. They are at once dressy, classic, and pre-polyester practical.

Nine poets read to an audience of about 30 people Sunday afternoon in the courtyard of the Red Barn Studio Museum. Topics included 9/11, disillusionment on a Boy Scout camping trip, and teenage angst over Farrah Fawcett. In case that wasn’t exciting enough, a squirrel fell out of a tree and hit audience member Christina Highsmith in the shoulder and ear. “It hurt a lot,” she said. Highsmith didn’t know what had struck her until she saw the squirrel going up her leg.

Mark Casebeer was drafted in 1968, in the middle of the Vietnam War. He left the Army about as soon as possible, three years later. He doesn’t talk about the experience fondly. But he’s a member of American Legion Post 140 in Lindsborg, and to honor fellow service members he has brought from his trumpet the honorary signal called taps, by his reckoning, more than 2,000 times.
