45 Years Ago Today:

Though it's from Philly TV, it's still neat - here's a technical difficulties moment during an episode of Rock World on WTAF Channel 29 out of Philadelphia. We interrupt a two-fer of Tim Curry's 1980 musical forays - "I Do The Rock" followed by "Paradise Garage", with one of the best technical difficulties cards I've seen in a while.

This aired on Saturday, July 12, 1980.

45 Years Ago Today:

Here's a segment of Channel 2 News at 5:30, dealing with the Fourth of July and especially fireworks safety. This is reported by Health & Science Editor Roger Field, and is introduced by Walter Jacobson.

The report begins with an interview with Vance Powyszynski, who at age 13 had lost a hand and now has a glass eye after a fireworks mishap, and goes on to 10-year-old Julia Martinez who had to undergo treatment after another fireworks accident, though not as bad as Vance's injuries; one common firecracker in such incidences is the M-80 which is shown, as is its destructive impact (a Sanka coffee can is twisted beyond recognition), under the supervision of Philip Bettiker of the Cook County Sheriff's Police, who advises that such a firecracker is an illegal explosive. Various other confiscated firecrackers (including a "super M-80") are shown, one of which was so powerful that one fireworks technician refused to detonate it ("even in a remote location"). The fuse - which takes anywhere from a fraction of a second to as much as four seconds - is the main culprit. This is followed by pointers from Tom Decker of the National Safety Council on how to handle firecrackers safely; and advises after the holiday to soak leftover firecrackers in a pail of water prior to discarding them. Video footage of a fire that claimed a home in Wilmette where George Yule had made firecrackers on March 17, 1978 is shown as cautionary advice on that score.

Roger ends his report by advising on the illegality of firecrackers in Chicago, and quoting police superintendent Richard Brzeczek who vows strict enforcement.

This aired on Thursday, July 3, 1980.
