Airbus once planned a high-capacity A380 Freighter, a jet that could have carried 150 tonnes across long intercontinental routes. Orders initially came from FedEx, UPS, Emirates and leasing firms, but the project soon ran into the same structural and production issues that affected the passenger A380.

The aircraft’s design created limits that freight operators could not ignore. Heavy cargo could only use the lower deck, while the upper deck would be restricted to lighter loads. The lack of a 747-style nose door also slowed handling. Operators faced the prospect of a large freighter that would reach its weight limits long before using its full volume.

These challenges were compounded by wiring and software problems across the A380 programme, which pushed deliveries back and undermined confidence. Customers cancelled their orders and Airbus quietly removed the A380F from its lineup by 2013.

Even if it had flown, the freighter would have faced tough competition from the 747-8F and the future 777-8F, both offering more flexibility and lower operating risk.

COMAC’s C919 is stepping onto the global stage as it arrives in Dubai ahead of its first Middle East showcase. The ferry flight, operated by China Southern Airlines, marks a symbolic moment for China’s commercial jet program as it tries to build credibility beyond its domestic base.

At the Dubai Airshow, COMAC will present two C919s alongside its C909 business jet, targeting interest from airlines in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. The aircraft competes with the A320 and 737 families and now holds more than 1,000 orders, almost entirely from Chinese carriers.

The type has carried over two million passengers across China, with Air China recently operating the first international service to Hong Kong. Certification remains its biggest limitation, as the jet is still approved only in China. Even so, visibility at Dubai gives COMAC a platform to engage new markets and position the C919 as a long-term alternative in a congested supply chain.

The United States has officially withdrawn a Biden era plan that would have required airlines to pay passengers cash compensation for long delays. The proposal aimed to introduce fixed payments for disruptions within an airline’s control, including up to 775 dollars for major delays. The Department of Transportation confirmed the cancellation, arguing that federal law does not empower the agency to mandate such payments and that the rule would raise costs for carriers and potentially increase fares.

The move drew criticism from Democratic lawmakers who said airlines should shoulder the financial burden when delays are avoidable. Industry groups supported the withdrawal, noting that carriers already refund passengers for cancellations and offer hotel or meal support during extended disruptions. Airlines maintain that mandatory payouts would have imposed heavy operational costs and exceeded the DOT’s legal authority.

The decision leaves the United States without a compensation system similar to Europe’s EU261 rules, where fixed payments apply for long delays. For now, US passengers will continue to rely on refunds and individual airline policies rather than guaranteed compensation.

A Jet2 service from Manchester to Agadir was forced to abandon its climb and hold for two hours after a hydraulic fault prevented the flaps from operating normally. The Boeing 737-800, which departed at 10:53 GMT, levelled at 6,000 feet and flew extended racetrack patterns with its landing gear down to burn fuel and reduce landing weight.

The aircraft, a 24-year-old jet that had not flown since November 10, eventually left the holding stack just before 13:00 and positioned for runway 05R. Emergency crews were placed on standby as the flight made its approach.

Touchdown came safely at 13:10 on runway 05L, ending a 2 hour and 18 minute airborne sequence. Fire crews briefly inspected the aircraft before it taxied back to the stand under its own power.
