Nathaniel Britan Dold Obituary
Nathaniel Britan “Nate” Dold, 18, of Sterling, Kansas, passed away May 15, 2025, in rural Ellsworth, Kansas. He was born January 3, 2007, in Lawrence, Kansas, the son of Paul and Deanna “DeeDee” (Clark) Dold. Nate was a lifelong Sterling resident. He graduated from Lyons High School, Lyons, Kansas, with the class of 2025, where he was on the football and wrestling team. Nate was a farmhand for Clarke Farm’s, Lyons. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Little River, Renegades Wrestling Club, Lyons, and Sterling Meadowlarks 4-H Club. Nate enjoyed wrestling, cooking, singing, mechanic work, discount shopping, and being an entrepreneur. He is survived by his parents, Paul and DeeDee Dold of Sterling, KS; five siblings, Samantha Loux and husband Jason of Fort Riley, KS and their children, JP, Liam, and Brayden, Victoria Crowther and husband Kenneth of McPherson, KS, Sala Dold of New York City, NY, Joshua Dold of Petersburg, VA, and Kyle Dold of Emporia, KS; paternal grandmother, Virginia Dold of Emporia, KS; maternal grandfather, Dan Clark of Topeka, KS; maternal grandmother, Betty Spellman of Emporia, KS; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Nate is preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Anthony Dold; maternal grandmother, Barbara Clark; and uncle, Rob Clark. Funeral mass will be at 10:00 A.M., Friday, May 23, 2025, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Hutchinson, with Father Sam Brand officiating. Burial will be at 12:00 P.M., Friday, May 23, 2025, at the Bean Memorial Cemetery, Little River. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 P.M., Thursday, May 22, 2025, at the First Baptist Church, Lyons, with family present. A rosary will be prayed at 6:30 P.M. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Nate Dold Wrestling Scholarship Fund in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.

Jerry Connery Obituary
We are sad to announce that on May 16, 2025, at the age of 81, Jerry Connery (Little River, Kansas) passed away. Family and friends are welcome to send flowers or leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.

As we bid farewell to this luminous soul, let his loved ones carry forward the torch of his memory, illuminating the path ahead with the warmth of his love and the brilliance of his spirit. Though Jerry may journey beyond the horizon of our sight, his essence remains woven into the very fabric of our being — a guiding light in the darkness, a beacon of hope in the night.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, May 22nd 2025 at 9:00 AM at the Bean Cemetery (2715 Ave I, Little River, KS 67457). A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 22nd 2025 at 2:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church (801 Leavenworth St, Manhattan, KS 66502).

Veteran's Flags

Due to a shortage of Veteran flags to be hung on Little River’s Main Street for three years during the months of May and November, you may display your previous Little River Veteran flag for these aforementioned dates for $50. You will need to bring your flag and a payment of $50 (checks made out to Little River Chamber of Commerce) to Susan at the Mutual Telephone Office before April 29, 2025. Frederick Lee “Fred” Barta, 94, of Little River, Kansas, passed away on February 15, 2025, at his home, surrounded by family.
Fred was born in rural Ellsworth, Kansas on February 3, 1931, the son of the late Helen Libby (Doubrava) and Ferdinand “Fred” Barta.
Fred graduated from Little River High School with the class of 1950. He was a lifetime Little River resident.
Fred proudly served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1961 and achieved the rank of Corporal. He served in the Korean war and his dedication to serving his country was an inspiration to all who knew him.
Fred worked as a farmer and rancher his entire life.
Fred was united in marriage to Patricia Louise “Pat” Barta (Fail) on May 3, 1952. They enjoyed 67 years of marriage until her passing on April 20, 2020.
Fred was a member of the Congregational Church, Little River, where he also served as a member of the men’s fellowship. Fred also spent many years serving his community through various organizations, including, the Lion’s Club, American Legion, 4-H, FFA, ULAR Watershed District, Rice County Soil Conservation District, the Goodfellow Organization, MTC Board and the USD 444 School Board. Among many other accomplishments, Fred was most proud of his Outstanding Young Farmer of the year award in 1963 and Little River Citizen of the Year award in 1981.
Fred enjoyed playing and watching baseball throughout his entire life. He rarely missed any local Little River Redskins events. Fred was quite the card shark and spent many hours with dear friends.
Fred is survived by his four children, Carla Shepherd of Hutchinson, Kyle Barta (Lori) of Little River, Ryan Barta (Jamie) of Little River and Emma Shepherd of Hutchinson; a son-in-law, John Shepherd; three grandchildren, Christopher Barta, Michael Barta (Tessa) and Megan Kane (Jake); and seven great-grandchildren, Mackinze, Steele, Elliot, Morgan, Bryleigh, Juli and Zayna. He was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters, Elrene Stowe, Thelma Sporn and Marianne Gawith.
A visitation will be held Friday, February 21, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at the Congregational Church, Little River, with Pastor Ted Weis officiating. Burial will follow at Bean Memorial Cemetery, with military honors by Ft. Riley Honor Guard.
Memorials may be given to the Congregational Church Men’s Fellowship, Little River, in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.
