When Flavor Flav’s signature clock went missing minutes before his charity auction, Asbury Park’s Zack Sandler calmly got things back on track in no time at all.

As a creative problem-solver working with Danny Clinch’s Transparent Clinch Gallery, Zack thrives in chaos.

He’s an Asbury local who wears many hats including co-producing art experiences, managing digital media, and helping bring music and visual storytelling to life across the city. For Zack, it’s all about using creativity to connect people and give back.

“Something my boss loves to talk about – that was instilled by his boss, Bruce Springsteen – is preaching about community and giving back to the community. That’s been passed down to me,” says Sandler.

What was once “a pile of woodchips and soil” at Jackson Woods Park in Long Branch is now an ecologically productive garden — absorbing about 7 pounds of carbon dioxide every year.

🌱 Shivali Sethi, a Holmdel resident and Senior at High Tech High School founded Carbon Roots, with a mission to combat climate change through the creation of carbon sink gardens in communities across Monmouth County, NJ.

Sethi and a group of volunteers planted 149 native plants of eight different species last summer at Jackson Woods Park. All of the plants were carefully selected by Sethi for their ability to absorb carbon.

Carbon Roots is currently working on a new carbon garden in Holmdel’s Tranquil Teachings Learning Center, this time maximizing carbon sequestration in a suburban area. They are also working with the Hazlet Township Carbon Initiative and aims to create a carbon sink that utilizes trees and native plants to encourage biodiversity and mitigate urban heat.

💚 “This is a unique way to prevent climate change while making sure we still have green space,” says Sethi.
