Learning more about our snake we encountered on the trail today. This is a gopher snake (Pituophis catenifer), a large, non-venomous species common in North America.It is known for its distinct dark, blotchy markings against a lighter, yellowish or tan body.Gopher snakes are often mistaken for rattlesnakes due to similar patterns and defensive behaviors, such as hissing loudly when threatened.
