Top 10 Things Rising Seniors Should Be Doing Over the Summer

1. Finalize your college list and try to narrow it down to 12 schools max!

2. Create a calendar with application deadlines for the colleges you are interested in, especially if you plan on applying early action or early decision.

3. Do some research on how you are to send test scores and other supplemental application materials. Make sure you know which schools require what.

4. Essay prompts for the Common App have been released. Do some writing and ask trusted people for their input.

5. The Common App is available August 1st, but you can browse the application earlier to get yourself prepared. Some colleges have their own applications. Look online to see which schools require which applications. If you play a fall sport, you want to aim to have your applications completed by the time school starts. You are going to be VERY busy come September!

6. Plan official college visits for the fall. When you register for college visits, this shows interest, which could help boost your chances of admissions.

7. Clean up your social media accounts. Colleges will do their research on you. Make sure you are projecting the person you want them to see.

8. Look into any scholarships you may be interested in and check for deadlines. Many of the deadlines will be around October or November. If you haven’t already, set up your Raise.me account.

9. Make sure you know your financial aid deadlines and which financial aid applications each of your schools require. Some colleges will have their own supplemental financial aid applications.

10. Get to know which colleges will require admissions interviews. You will want to prepare for your interviews and schedule them for optimal times during the fall.

Most importantly, remember to spend some quality downtime as a family. The summer months after your student graduates high school will be spent attending open houses and orientations. You will be very busy packing your student up for their new home. Savor those moments when you can!
