With the temperatures heating up, school being out, and all that is involved with “summer vacation” being in full swing, we need to address a few things regarding the use of motorized carts (golf carts and side by side utility vehicles UTV’s) with the City of Llano.
In 2024, the City of Llano adopted an ordinance that allowed the use of UTV’s on our city streets. The specific ordinance can be found in Article VI. You can click straight to it here: https://ecode360.com/47254498
This ordinance made it more convenient for a lot of folks to travel within the city, but it’s also been something that has not been completely understood and we are pointing out a few of the more important elements of it for you today.
First, and foremost, you must have a valid driver’s license to operate one. Anyone can operate one if they have a valid driver’s license. Kids without a driver’s license can not.
Second, certain equipment is needed to operate your golf cart or UTV in the city. In fact, every motorized cart on a street must be equipped with the following:
1) Operational head lamps;
2) Operational tail lamps;
2) Reflectors;
4) Operational parking brake;
5) Mirrors;
6) License plate from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles
7) Slow-moving-vehicle emblem.
***All required equipment shall meet state and federal motor vehicle safety standards.***
Third, you can only operate the golf carts and UTV’s on neighborhood streets. You may cross the state-maintained highways/ranch roads that run through our city, but you can’t travel on them.
Specifically, the ordinance states: No person may operate a motorized cart upon a street, trafficway, multi-lane or federal, county or state route having a posted speed greater than 35 m.p.h. unless the person is crossing at an intersection. Ford, Bessemer, Young and RR152 all have posted speeds greater than 35 m.p.h., so please stay off those roads unless you are crossing directly over them at an intersection.
We’ve had a lot of folks ask about the bridge and the answer is no; you can’t take them over the bridge due to that being Ford/Bessemer and we just mentioned that you can’t drive them on those streets.
Look, we get it. They're very convenient to use in jotting around town, especially with gas/diesel prices being what they are, but there are rules in place for the safety of everyone involved.
Please familiarize yourself with the ordinance so you'll be in the know too.
