Girls Basketball

Winter is here, and Basketball is as well. Kicking off our 4th season of full hoops coverage on WKHJ is one of the circled games on the schedule. From Ram Arena at Southern High School, in Girls basketball it’s the Southern Lady Rams hosting the Northern Huskies. The Rams are coming of a 2nd straight State Final appearance. Southern surely wants to make it 3 in a row and finally bring that trophy home to Oakland. Northern had themselves a very good season last winter, and if not for a couple minutes, may have wrote a different ending. Northern will look a little different this year after the graduation of some key parts, but have 3x WKHJ Player of the Year Abby Nelson to lead them. Tip-off is at 6:30PM, with our pre-game show The Shoot-around gets this year going at 6:00PM. Join “The Voice of Garrett County Sports” Ben Slazek and the well groomed Ron Opel for this early season fun. As always, tonight’s game will be live-streamed on Facebook @ Garrett County Radio.

2025 Northern High School Football
Husky of the Year

This award is given to the SR that best exemplifies dedication, commitment, leadership, work ethic, and being an asset to his team.

Ansen Miller SR OL/DL

I’ve been doing this for a minute, so when you bring up most players you get the usual “they’re a good player, BUT…”. I have no recollection of anyone saying that about Ansen Miller. Talking to several coaches about Ansen’s on field performance, my biggest takeaway was how coachable and unselfish the Huskies lineman is. Miller’s work ethic is up there as well, and nobody may have improved the most between FR and SR years. His willingness to do anything to make a teammate or his team better, whether running film for the coaches or going over technique with younger players, endeared himself to his teammates. That respect led the SR to be a team captain this season. The All-WestMAC selection’s play on Offense, Defense, and Special Teams on the field, and leadership and work ethic off of it, gave Ansen a well earned winner of the 2025 Northern High School Football Husky of the Year.

2025 Southern High School Football
Ram of the Year

This award is given to the SR that best exemplifies dedication, commitment, leadership, work ethic, and being an asset to his team.

Brenden Woolslayer SR WR/DB

When covering sports, you often forget about “real life”. Unfortunately this past Spring, real life smacked the Southern family in the face. The unthinkable loss of the Ram’s Trenton Switzer left many of his teammates to try and process this tragedy. After the initial shock and sadness, the passing of “T-Money” galvanized his football family. The team found many ways to keep his memory front and center. Among Trenton’s many friends is Brenden Woolslayer. The SR had been recruited by his friend to join the Rams team, despite not playing at any point in High School. Brenden kept his word and honored his friend’s wishes by playing this season. Brenden wasn’t a big part of the offense or defense, but contributed on special teams and was there every practice helping his teammates get better and gave every bite of himself to the process. The amount of courage, bravery, dedication, and character Brenden played with is unmeasurable. To be perfectly honest, it’s one of the best things I’ve seen in 20+ years of covering sports. It’s my honor to name Brenden Woolslayer as the 2025 Ram of the year.

Brenden is #7 in the picture of Southern’

The 2025 WKHJ Garrett County High School Fall-Stars

Continued….

Marissa Perez SR Northern Volleyball
With a very young team Ana’s only 1 of 2 SR on the team, Marissa had to be a real leader on the floor. The Huskies setter was responsible for keeping the team running and executing the game plan. The SR racked up 571 assists and 10.0 per set. Perez also racked up more than 100 digs and was 3rd on the Huskies in aces. A fiery and competitive player was instrument in Northern’s undefeated regular season. It’s going to be extremely difficult to replace Perez’s skills and intangibles.

Abby Nelson SR Northern Soccer
Abby can definitely make the claim of best all-around female athlete in Western MD. The SR’s best weapons is she can run and she can score. Nelson’s 29 goals and 62 points led Northern and the WestMAC. It would be miscarriage of justice if the Husky standout is not WestMAC player of the year. Will be fun to see if the on-field chemistry developed with Ainsley McHenry-Sorber transfers from the pitch to the basketball court.

and finally….
Northern & Southern Unified Football Teams
I don’t want to single out any particular players or teams for the most part. Team sports in its simplest and purest form is multiple competitors with different strengths and weaknesses, uniting in a single grouping, with a single goal to share in success for all involved. That pretty much defines Unified Sports. Yes, Northern has now won back to back state titles in the skills portion of the game and finished 2nd in 5x5. Southern’s athletes were right at the top as well. There are no losers. Every participant is a winner. Garrett County schools have become the standard-bearer in this field. It’s Sports for the joy of Sports.

Thanks for a great Fall Season. Winter games begin Friday. We will be there again!!!!

The 2025 WKHJ Garrett County High School Fall-Stars

Continued….

Violet Taylor FR Northern Volleyball
It is sometimes difficult for a FR to get on the floor or find their niche when joining a very good team. Violet not only got on the floor and found a niche, Taylor was a big part in the Huskies undefeated regular season. The libero was a dig machine in her first season, recording 100 more than any teammate. Ranked 2nd for Northern in both assists and aces. Violet was 1 or 3 Huskies to play every set in 2025. I don’t think I’m reaching by saying she will make this list again.

Emily Sweitzer SR Southern Soccer
Southern had an 8 game win improvement in 2025 and got the Lady Rams program back on schedule. The play of FR Emily Sweitzer definitely contributed to that accomplishment. Sweitzer injected some youthful exuberance while making a smooth transition to Varsity level play. The Rams play-maker was at or near the Rams leaders. The FR also ranked high among area players. The Ram’s roster will return pretty much the same team in 2026. Emily’s current trajectory will help Southern regain their footing in the WestMAC.

Southern High School Marching Band
The Southern band has become the class of the area and one of the best on the Atlantic coast. Under the direction of Mr. Jason Shaw, Southern continued to fill the trophy case. At this season’s TOB Atlantic Coast Championships. The Rams placed 3rd in the Open Division with a 92.1 score. Southern also placed 1st in Individual Music Analysis Caption, 2nd in Music Overall, 2nd in percussion, and 4th in Color Guard. Well done all.

Northern Marching Band
Let me premise this by stating that I believe that the bands are as much a part of Friday Night Lights and HS sports as anything. Despite having smaller numbers, The Northern Band thrived under 1st year director, Miss Miranda Cook. The Huskies hilighted the Fall with a Region 5 Class 1-A TOB Championship.

Myah Watson SR Southern Volleyball
The SR team co-captain Middle Blocker had one of those seasons that every student-athlete hopes for in their final season. The girl in the middle led the Rams in kills (by more than 100), blocks, digs, aces, and wins in rock, paper, scissors,(could be true). Myah improved in all those areas from her JR season. Watson’s versatility was a key component in the Rams improvement this season.

Charlie Buchanan SR Southern Soccer
Charlie, once again, rolled over a stellar Track campaign In the Spring, to an impactful SR season on the pitch. The combination of Buchanan and teammate Shane Sisler gave Southern a formidable combination on the attack. The Striker was among the best in the area in points, goals, and assists. His mentoring of the younger players will help Rams program after his graduation.

Ainsley McHenry-Sorber JR Northern Soccer
Ainsley had a very good SO season and had an even better JR year. The SO Was a key member of ‘24 team’s run deep into the playoffs. The Huskies best playmaker, McHenry-Sorber once again led the Huskies (and WestMAC) in assists with 20, 15 more than any other teammate, and potted 20 goals as well. Ainsley was 1 of 3 WestMAC players to reach 60 points. Was half of arguably the best 1-2 punch in the region with Abby Nelson.
