--CORRECTION—

When I posted our list of standout Northern female athletes, I listed “Emily Hostetler”. It should have been Emma Hostetler. My mistake.

Note: If there is ever a name mixup or a wrong picture, please let me know. All Garrett County student-athletes work hard and show great dedication and commitment, the last think I want is to make a mistake.

2024-2025

The Big One is here. These young women and men are the Cream of the Crop (Ooh Yeah!!!!) of the 2024-2025 sports year. This will be the first of what will be an annual award to recognize those whose performance made them best in Garrett County.

The finalists and winner was chosen by the WKHJ Sports Crew, with input from others associated with the teams, Garrett County Sports, and WKHJ. Criteria included on field success, statistical achievement, role on team, team success, how many sports played and contributions there in, and intangibles such as leadership and dedication. Listed below are the sports that each student-athlete participated in as well as Awards presented by WKHJ, consensus All-State recognition, and any major milestone accomplished this year. Winners will be announced on Friday June 27 during Garrett County Sports Spotlight at 9:30 AM, during Benji Law’s Morning Show. With that said….here are this years finalists for 2024-2025 Athlete of the Year.

#10 - Hayden Williams INF / P
Southern Baseball SO

Another SO for Southern that arrived in 2025. Hayden played regularly at 2B for the Rams and fielded at a very respectable .907. His offensive numbers won’t take your breath away, but was a key contributor with 12 RBI’s and 2 triples. Helped his team with 6 Sacrifices. This is a gut pick for me I see a lot of potential in Hayden and I believe he could be one the key players for Coach McLaughlin. I expects big year.

______________

#11 - Nick Riley OF / P
Northern Baseball

Nick had quite the Senior year. Our Northern Football Player of the Year had an All-State level of play helping Northern to their 1st State Final. That season forced Nick to get a late start in wrestling. No issues, placed 7th in Region. The SR, not quite tired yet, then was a big contributor for Coach Carr. Nick, who doesn’t wear a watch, he simply decides what time it is (had to get 1 more in), hit .350 and 20 RBI’s as he added some pop to the Huskies lineup. Good Luck to the newest Yellow Jacket as Nick will be playing football for Waynesburg University in Greene County,PA, about 25 minutes from me. They got themselves a player.

Honorable Mention

#7 - Emelee Parks OF
Southern Softball JR

Here we go again. Another All-Star team, another appearance for Emily Parks. I will say it again, Emelee is maybe the best female athlete in Western MD. The JR is one of the most competitive athletes I’ve ever covered. Parks maned CF for Coach Hill and led the Rams in runs and excelled in the 1 hole. Looks and plays the part of a restaurant quality leadoff hitterbeing said, I’m gonna start writing her synopsis for what I’m sure will be an All-Star Fall season now. You know it’s gonna happen.

_______________

#17 - Ryan Bird 3B / P
Southern Baseball JR

I do miss the hair. However he styles it, Ryan had a solid year for the Rams. The JR brought some pop to the Rams lineup card. Had a team leading 3 dingers and had an OPS over 1. Led Southern in walks as well. Ryan made 7 appearances on the bump for Coach McLaughlin striking out more than a player an inning. It will be exciting where those power numbers can go as Ryan continues to put in the work.

#5 - Cole Folk SS
Northern Baseball SR

Cole is a glue guy. He’s the type of player that teams have to have on the field to be successful. On defense, The SR had a good season at SS, field in at a .930 clip, leading the Huskies in assists and having the 2nd most total chances on the club. I’m going to admit that when I was putting this team together, I didn’t have Cole in the mix. Then I looked at his numbers. He’s no Rafael Belliard (ask any pirate fan over 45). Folk was among the Huskies leaders in hits, RBI’s, 2B (Doubles), and At-Bats. Going back to his team first approach, Cole led Northern with 6 sacrifices. It’s a category that is often overlooked, as Cole was at times. It doesn’t factor into many metrics and his not as glamorous as OPS or HR’s, but is necessary to a team that has to win close games and shows a willingness to help the team do whatever is needed to win and do whatever is asked of him. That entire statement pretty much nails what Cole did in his final year for Coach Carr. He will be one of the toughest players to replace next season.
