I’ve been the "After" picture. (At least) Twice. 🏃♀️✨
If you look at these magazine clips, you see a woman who lost 102 lbs and became a marathoner. That woman was driven, focused, and successful.
But as I share in the foreword of my upcoming book, tentatively titled "The Identity Pivot: Stop F*cking Yourself and Finally Make Your Goals Stick", those "After" photos didn't stop me from sliding back. Why? Because while my body changed, my subconscious identity stayed stuck in the identity that I "struggle" to keep weight off. I was trapped in the "Before/After/Before/After" cycle because I hadn't yet shifted the core of who I believed I was. And the sucky part is, I didn't even realize those beliefs and patterns were still deep down in there.
Here is the truth: Identity shifting isn’t easy. It takes a focused plan because while we think we are doing the work, our old patterns are waiting at a subconscious level to pull us back to "comfort"—even if we thought we left those identities years ago. Without a specific strategy to rewire that pull, we default back to who we think we are.
Even after I cemented my identity as a runner, life got in the way. When injuries happened, and the running stopped, that "lack of a solid identity" did me in. I hadn't shifted to being a healthy person who handles setbacks. My "all-or-nothing" subconscious wasn't supporting me; it was a threat I didn't even realize was there. Because my health was cemented only to running, once the running stopped, the slide to "Struggle Town" was a quick trip. Our brains love familiarity, so that slide happens to many of us.
Today is different. I’m not just chasing a number on a scale or an external "win". I’m finally stepping into the identity of a person who thinks, feels, and acts like a healthy person—every single day. If I run, I run, but my identity doesn't revolve around any one external action. By shifting my identity to someone who puts my health first, the results naturally follow, rather than me frantically chasing them and then crumbling when everything isn't perfect.
I’ve spent the last few months alcohol-free, clear-headed, and moving my body daily, trusting that as I change who I am, my success becomes inevitable. I'm finally breaking the cycle for good, and I've developed the framework to help you do it, too.
