Today is the first day of astronomical winter, as the winter solstice happens at 10:03 a.m. today (12/21). It's the shortest day and longest night of the year, with about 9 hours and 15 minutes of daylight.

Astronomical winter lasts until the spring equinox on Friday, March 20, 2026.

Meteorological winter started Dec. 1 and includes January and February.

However you mark the seasons, this is the turning point. The days start getting a little longer from here!

πŸ“¬ Important Update for Donors Who Mail Gifts πŸ“¬

As you plan your year-end giving, we want to share a time-sensitive update from the U.S. Postal Service that may affect mailed donations.

Beginning December 24, 2025, USPS will apply postmarks at regional processing centers instead of local post offices. This means the postmark date may be several days later than when your gift is actually mailedβ€”and may no longer reliably reflect the mailing date for tax purposes.

To help ensure your year-end gift is properly documented, we encourage donors to hand their envelope directly to a USPS employee and request one of the following:
β€’ A manual (local) postmark applied by USPS staff
β€’ A Postage Validation Imprint (PVI) purchased at the counter
β€’ Certified or Registered Mail, or a Certificate of Mailing

We hope this information is helpful as you finalize your holiday giving plans. Thank you for your continued generosity and support of our neighbors in need.

..Much Colder Temperatures and Localized Travel Impacts overnight
into Friday Morning...

Temperatures currently in the 30s and 40s across the area will drop sharply overnight, below freezing and into the teens with a cold frontal passage. This may create slick spots on recently rain soaked roads and surfaces, especially if untreated. Remaining rain showers will begin to change over to snow showers from west to east through the early morning hours with minimal accumulations
and brief reductions in visibilities. The snow showers may further create slick road conditions throughout the area. Gusty westerly winds will continue with the highest gusts up to 35-40
mph. The gusty winds will drop wind chills to around zero degrees by Friday morning.

Motorists should plan for potentially hazardous driving conditions overnight into Friday morning by slowing down and giving more time to reach your destination. If planning on spending time outdoors in the cold, you should dress in layers and cover any exposed skin. Don't forget your pets and livestock by providing shelter from the cold.

❄❄❄ WINTER OPS ALERT ❄❄❄

Well, the sun and "30-degree heat wave" was fun while it lasted. πŸ₯²

However, warmer temps aren't far off! In the meantime, we will be dropping off drastically with temperatures this evening. That presents the risk of some of the rain that's fallen today freezing on roads, especially sensitive areas like bridges and overpasses.

Pre-treatment is unfortunately not a good option here, because the rain would wash it off the road entirely. Instead, beginning at around 11 p.m., we will start rolling out partial call outs of to treat any areas that become slick once things drop below freezing. πŸ₯ΆπŸŒ‘

It would be highly advised to take it easy on the morning commute tomorrow just to be safe, as roads may become slick! 🧊🧊
