We love this mural of President and Mrs. Carter that now greets visitors at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport! The mural, "Well Done Good and Faithful Servant, The Carters,” was painted by artist Fabian Williams, who created the poster for last year’s “Jimmy Carter 100: A Celebration in Song.” You can see the mural from an upper balcony of the domestic terminal above North baggage claim.

My wife and I just watched The Six Triple Eight on Netflix a powerful film about the U.S. Women's Army Corps unit of color that played a critical role in delivering mail to troops during World War II.

While the story itself is compelling, we were stunned to learn that these women (and over 50,000 others) were trained at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia—just 30 miles from where we grew up and attended school from kindergarten through high school.

This discovery left us both shocked and frustrated. Chickamauga proudly highlights its Civil War history, but the story of this wartime training center, located on the battlefield grounds and now in ruins, is barely acknowledged.

National Park Service and Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park have resources to preserve the memory of these brave women. We urge Georgia educators to include this important chapter of history in their curriculum—it’s a story that deserves to be told.
