My little buddy.
I wasn’t ready. I honestly think he knew so he just hung on until I could come to terms with his journey being over. In the end I had to help him stay steady so he could p*e, and he pretty much slept all day.
We had taken him to the vet last month when he stopped eating his dog food and they diagnosed him with end stage CHF. His time was coming, but he gave us several more weeks to take him places and feed him whatever he wanted.
I had tried to hold off until after the holidays, more for myself and the vets than Chimmi, but we knew on Christmas Day that he wasn’t going to make it into 2025. He stopped eating all together, even ice cream and cookies wouldn’t tempt him. So, the day after Christmas we called our amazing vet and they gave us a time in the afternoon. After a full day of cuddles, and one last car ride, Chimmi passed in our arms listening to us tell stories of his life.
He was the first small dog I owned, he traveled the country, even flew commercially with us. He went to every race, horse show, and off-road trip. He completed the Rubicon and countless trails in Moab and Colorado. He ate so many things he shouldn’t have, wandered off the minute his little paws hit the dirt, and caused chaos wherever he could. He used to spill my Starbucks all over my car if left unattended for even a second, and he ate any leather he could get his teeth on as a puppy. He watched his best buddy Sherman pass and his little sister Maya but I know he will be the first one looking for me at the 🌈 bridge.
16 years seems like forever, and nothing. I know he is happy and whole out there with his puppy energy.
