When I came here, it almost felt like Cambodia was telling me: be yourself, do what you want, and see what happens.

So I did.

I followed the things I believed in, I became more comfortable being myself, and some of the things I started here became meaningful and successful.

Cambodia also gave me people and opportunities that I honestly don’t know if I would have found anywhere else in the world.

I’ve had the chance to be among the first to do certain things here in Cambodia and for Cambodia, and this country supported me while I was doing them.

Looking back, I feel like being here at this point in my life happened at the right time.

Cambodia gave me the space to be myself, take chances, build something meaningful, and realize that I’m capable of more than I once thought. πŸ‡°πŸ‡­β€οΈ

πŸ‡°πŸ‡­ People often ask me why I stay in Cambodia.

Some people look at Cambodia from the outside and assume nothing happens here, that life must be better somewhere else, or that there is less access to the things we need.

But for me, that is not true.

Cambodia gives me something very important. Here, I feel safe. I feel loved. I feel like I can live my life in peace.

People may not always believe it, but Cambodia has so much more than they expect. There is access to what we need, there is life here, there are restaurants, food, and the freedom to live without constantly feeling afraid.

Of course, no place in the world is perfect. Petty crime exists everywhere, and life will always have its imperfections. But in Cambodia, I can walk outside with my dog, go for a walk, and come back without living in fear.

For me, that matters deeply.

That is why, even when people question it, I still choose Cambodia. khouri

πŸ‡°πŸ‡­ Yulia is a Ukrainian-born, Canadian-raised woman who chose Cambodia instead of returning to the West.

For Yulia Khouri, the answer is bigger than lifestyle or opportunity. Cambodia became the place where she found acceptance, community, purpose, and eventually, a home.

Yulia arrived in Cambodia in 2010 expecting to stay for only a few months. What began with rescuing individual street animals grew into Animal Mama Veterinary Hospital, Animal Mama Shelter, nationwide outreach missions and Home of Heroes, a retirement sanctuary for former working and demining dogs.

She also created opportunities for Cambodian students to become qualified veterinarians while helping local rescuers, pagodas and communities access essential animal care. Together with her Cambodian team, Yulia’s work has now reached more than 100,000 animals through vaccinations, sterilization, deworming and other medical services.

In this emotional documentary interview, Yulia opens up about:

As a monk, I can’t just run to a spaghetti restaurant or a pizzeria whenever I want. I eat the Khmer food that is offered to me.

Looking back, I realized that for almost 10 years I had a lot of resistance toward foods I didn’t know.

I would say things like, β€œI don’t eat that,” or β€œI’m full,” when really, a lot of it came from simply not knowing the food.

Now I approach it differently.

Whatever I receive, I try it.

That doesn’t mean I have to pretend to like everything. If something is too spicy or has too many bones for me, that’s completely fine.

But at least I gave myself the chance to experience it first.

That is one of the lessons I’ve learned during my journey as a monk: sometimes we resist something simply because it’s unfamiliar. Give it a chance before deciding it isn’t for you. πŸ‡°πŸ‡­πŸ™

I once lived a completely different life.

Luxury hotels, big restaurants, champagne, expensive brands, high-level business, and constantly working toward the next achievement.

But no matter what I accomplished, it never felt like enough.

I was always thinking about the next project, the next goal, and what I could do better. I kept working because I felt like I needed to prove that I was worthy.

Then my life changed.

After a serious accident left me unable to move normally for a long time, I finally had something I had rarely given myself before: time to stop.

That period forced me to look inward and ask why I had spent so much of my life working, achieving, and looking for validation from outside myself.

Eventually, that journey led me toward meditation, Buddhism, and becoming a monk.

Today, I have almost none of the things that once defined my life. I let go of so much, and I realized I don’t need nearly as much as I thought I did.

And after everything I had before, I can now say something I never expected:

I’ve never been so happy in my life than I am right now. πŸ™
