Sept 3 salmon report from the Columbia River Compact:

RIVER CONDITIONS
• The recent five-day average outflow at Bonneville Dam is 105 kcfs which is near the five-year average of 103 kcfs. The summer spill program ended on September 1.
• The recent five-day average water temperature at the Bonneville Dam forebay is 72.6°F compared to a five-year average of 69.8°F. The five-day average visibility at Bonneville Dam is 7 feet.

STOCK STATUS

Fall Chinook
• Through September 3 a total of 156,474 adult and 29,883 jack fall chinook have passed Bonneville Dam. The adult count is the 5th highest count to date in the last 10-years. The adult count is comprised of an estimate of 108,170 bright stock fish, 36,254 adult age tules, and 12,050 jack age tules that are just over the adult size criteria. The ad-clip rate for adult fish is 50.5% which is higher than average for this time of year. Based on the recent 10-year average, the adult fall chinook return would be expected to be 34% complete on September 3 and reach 50% complete on September 8.

Upriver Summer Steelhead
• From July 1 through September 3 a total of 117,816 A- and B-Index steelhead have passed Bonneville Dam including 50,139 unclipped fish. This is the largest count to date in the last 10-years. The clip rate to date (57% is lower than the 10-year average clip rate of 61%)
• Total A- and B-Index steelhead passage at Bonneville Dam (July–October) would be expected to be approximately 67% complete on September 3 based on the recent 10-year average timing.
• During July 1–August 21, 393 steelhead (178 clipped and 215 unclipped) have been sampled at the Bonneville Dam Adult Fish Facility (AFF). Of the steelhead sampled since July 1, 389 have been A-Index fish. Four B-Index fish have been sampled to date.

Coho
• Through September 3, a total of 12,496 adult and 2,111 jack coho have passed Bonneville Dam. The clip rate for adult coho at Bonneville is 19.4% which is below average for this time of year. The adult count is the 6th highest count to date in the last 10 years.

Run size updates
• The U.S. v. Oregon Technical Advisory Committee met on Tuesday, September 2 to review and discuss information relative to the upriver A-/B-Index summer steelhead and upriver fall Chinook. Based on the passage to date and assumptions of passage timing at Bonneville Dam, TAC maintained the A-Index steelhead expected abundance at Bonneville Dam of 163,400 total fish (including 59,900 unclipped). It is too early to provide an in-season assessment of the B-Index return.
• It is too early in the upriver fall Chinook return to provide an updated abundance expectation.
• TAC does not provide an in-season abundance projection for coho as the majority of the run returns to tributaries downstream of Bonneville Dam. TAC monitors passage at Bonneville Dam but typically does not formally update the upriver coho return expectation.

Chinook Kristen Simerson carried the Chinook flag to the summit of Mt. Fuji- Japan’s tallest mountain.

It was her second climb to the top of Fuji-San, but her first time flying our flag there. Kristen and her husband Calvin are living in Northern Japan for work with Boeing, and even abroad they continue finding powerful ways to represent .

From mountaintops to street corners, let’s keep the Chinook flag flying high. Carry it with pride. Share the story. Tag us and show the world

It's the first day of meteorological fall - you can now whip out those pumpkin spice flavored drinks with little to no shame! 🎃☕️😉 That said, above normal temperatures will keep conditions feeling a bit more summer-like this week. While the autumn equinox isn't until September 22nd, today marks the beginning of fall climatologically.
