The fight against invasive sea lampreys in the Grand River is getting a boost with a $2.1 million federal grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Sea lampreys, sometimes referred to as β€œvampires of the Great Lakes,” are native to the Atlantic Ocean and its tributaries.

The fish invaded the upper Great Lakes in the 1920s and has been wreaking havoc on the native fishery ever since, especially whitefish and lake trout, according to the GLFC. One sea lamprey can kill up to 40 pounds of fish.
