Santa Barbara Museum of Art Acquires Work by Narsiso Martinez
Charlie James Gallery is delighted to announce the acquisition of works by gallery artist Narsiso Martinez by the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. The gallery wishes to thank James Glisson, Curator of Contemporary Art at the museum for championing the artist for acquisition.
Narsiso’s piece Self-Portrait En La Cherry (with Strawberry Fields Forever in the Background) is a self-portrait composed in memory of his nine seasons as a farmworker in the fields of Eastern Washington. The piece is composed in gouache, ink and charcoal on found produce boxes from various produce companies. Narsiso Martinez paints on produce boxes to call attention to the invisible and dangerous labor that supports American agriculture. A farmworker himself for many years, this painting comes out of his time picking cherries and other crops during summers to pay tuition at Cal State Long Beach. Despite the summer heat, he wears a hoodie to protect against pesticides. About this work, Martinez says, “While acknowledging the hard work and contribution of farmworkers, this piece represents accomplishing personal goals through the metaphor of harvesting.” This recent addition to the collection is the first by the artist to enter the Museum's collection.
Narsiso Martinez (b. 1977, Oaxaca, Mexico) migrated to the United States when he was 20 years old. He attended Evans Community Adult School and completed high school in 2006 at the age of 29. To finance his education, Martinez worked seasonally in the apple orchards of Eastern Washington for nine years. In the fall of 2012 Narsiso earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from California State University Long Beach. In the spring of 2018 he received a Master of Fine Arts degree in drawing and painting from California State University Long Beach, and was awarded the prestigious Dedalus Foundation MFA Fellowship in Painting and Sculpture. His work has been exhibited both locally and internationally. Narsiso lives and works in Long Beach, CA.
