Southern Miss announced Wednesday that Dr. Charleen McNeill has been selected as dean of the University of Southern Mississippi’s College of Nursing and Health Professions (CNHP) following a nationwide search.

The school said McNeill comes to Southern Miss from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, where she currently serves as executive associate dean of academic affairs and holds a professorship in its College of Nursing.

She will join the Southern Miss administrative team on October 1, pending approval of the Board of Trustees of the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning.

The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) is celebrating Taylor Garretson, a senior who was recently crowned the 2025 Mississippi Miss Hospitality.

The school said the Greene County native emerged at the top of a highly competitive field of 47 contestants from across the state, following a rigorous week of interviews, speeches and stage presentations.

Now serving as the 76th Mississippi Miss Hospitality, Garretson, a digital journalism major and dance minor, will spend the next year traveling the state as a goodwill ambassador for economic development and tourism.

Toner earned a Bachelor of Arts in international studies and Chinese from the University of Mississippi (UM) in May and is in the UM Chinese Language Flagship Program.

For those who lived in South Mississippi or nearby areas, reminders of Hurricane Katrina are not necessary, as the heart-wrenching scenes, losses and the lives of local residents who were lost are etched forever in the minds of Katrina survivors. On Friday, August 29, the City of Long Beach will be hosting a special memorial on the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

Southern Miss head basketball coach Jay Ladner has added Bryce Garris to his staff for the 2025-26 season as an assistant coach and director of player personnel.

The school said Garris is making his second stop in Hattiesburg after previously serving as a graduate assistant under Ladner during the 2019-20 season.

Prior to coming back to Hattiesburg, Garris was coaching with Bab Elite AAU. Garris has also made stops at Kentucky Wesleyan, Georgetown College and Tallahassee Community College.
