May 5th marks the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG), a day to honor the lives lost and bring attention to the ongoing crisis that continues to impact Indigenous communities. This day was officially recognized in 2017 after the tragic murder of Hanna Harris and the countless other abductions and murders of Indigenous women and girls.
On this day, we come together to call for justice and action from all levels of government. We must address the systemic barriers and injustices embedded in legislation that perpetuate this crisis.
Here are some ways you can take action:
1. Wear red, take a photo, and share it on social media to bring awareness of .
2. Join the National Indigenous Women's Resource Center.
3. Watch "Voices Unheard."
4. Watch “Bring Her Home.”
5. Listen to our Indigenous Rights Radio interview with Leya Hale.
6. Include Two-Spirit Relatives in Awareness of MMIWG2S.
7. Claim free print subscription for NIWRC’s Restoration of Native Sovereignty and Safety for Native Women magazine, courtesy of Urban Indian Health Institute
Let's stand together, raise our voices, and honor the memory of those who are no longer with us. Your support can make a difference.
