Lawmakers call for Green Asphalt closure amid air quality concerns in Queens and Brooklyn.

LIC POST -- By Shane O’Brien

A group of Queens and Brooklyn lawmakers is calling on the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to temporarily suspend operations at Green Asphalt, an asphalt plant in Blissville, until the company addresses alleged air pollution affecting nearby neighborhoods.

Green Asphalt, located at 37-98 Railroad Ave., uses recycled asphalt to produce mixes marketed as more cost-effective and sustainable than traditional asphalt. The company has operated out of the industrial area near Newtown Creek since 2011.

However, residents in both Blissville and Greenpoint have long complained about persistent fumes and odors from the facility, which they say have created serious quality-of-life issues for more than a decade. The DEC cited Green Asphalt with a nuisance violation in January 2024, noting that emissions from the plant “unreasonably interfered with the comfortable enjoyment of life or property.”

In a joint statement, U.S. Rep Nydia Velázquez, State Senators Kristen Gonzalez and Senator Michael Gianaris, Assembly Members Emily Gallagher and Claire Valdez and Council Members Julie Won and Lincoln Restler have called on Green Asphalt to double the height of its existing smokestack in order to carry emissions from the plant further into the atmosphere and away from the surrounding area.

Thomas J. Mituzas, a member of the Blissville Civic Association, said he was forced to temporarily move his 96-year-old aunt out of the area last summer over concerns for her health because the air was “choking us so badly.”

“We had the windows closed, and it was still choking us,” Mituzas said.

CUBBY WINGS CONTINUES POURS GREASE INTO OUR SEWERS AGAIN.

This was sent to me yesterday from a reader of our page. Once again Cubby Wings at Gantry (49th & Center) is pouring grease down our sewers.

As many long time readers remember, they have been doing this for years, you can do a search on this page to see the damage they have caused.

The sewers here go directly into east river. They are damaging our wildlife and our east river. Cubby Wings has no concern for our community. This happened yesterday at around 2:42 pm. Please copy photo and make 311 complaint.

| Restaurant Owner Frank Ottomanelli Seeks Artists for Concerts, Dances, Murals + More.

By: It's In Queens.

The owner of F. Ottomanelli By The Water is about to build a stage with the Midtown Manhattan skyline as a backdrop.

So here’s the question. Are you ready to perform?

Frank Ottomanelli plans to host countless events on the new stage in Hunter’s Point Park South. Music. Dance. Comedy. Theater. Almost anything, really. And he wants local artists of all ages to participate. All spring. All summer. All the time!
Outsiders are welcome, too.
Send an email to [email protected] to perform in an awe-inspiring spot.

The lifelong butcher and food entrepreneur plans to add an oyster bar, flowers, tables, chairs, lighting, and other amenities to the area where the 16-foot-by-12-foot stage will be. He also hopes to hire crafters to lead workshops for children in the vicinity.

Community Mural

It appears that Ottomanelli is building a mini-arts center in Hunter’s Point. He’s also seeking submissions for a community mural that snakes through his venue. (See below) Click here to submit a proposal. An Advisory Committee will blindly review proposals with a special eye towards appropriateness and compliance with the Community Togetherness theme. Selected artists get a $500 stipend and reimbursement for all materials (ie. exterior paint, brushes, MDO board) used in the project.

Ottomanelli By The Water’s address is 52-10 Center Blvd. in Long Island City. Currently, it consists of a concession stand, covered and uncovered dining areas, an open outdoor space, and the growing mural. The East River flows by the property, which is also near NYC Ferry’s LIC stop.

UPDATED WITH NEW DATE:

Due to Mayor Eric Adams having a Town Hall meeting with the 114 on May 28th, we want to reschedule our meeting to Thursday May 30th at 7 p.m. at The New York Irish Center located at 1040 Jackson Avenue in Long Island City.

WE ARE HEARING: EXPLOSIVE 108TH MEETING COMING!

FIREWORKS ARE COMING TO NEXT COMMUNITY COUNCIL MEETING WITH NYPD 108TH.

Thursday, May 30th, at 7 p.m. at The New York Irish Center located at 1040 Jackson Avenue in Long Island City for our monthly community council meeting.

After the sham CB2 meeting where they tabled the motion to put in parking rules at Gantry, residents are fired up over the food trucks that have destroyed the waterfront and they want the 108th to enforce the law.

LET'S LOOK AT SOME FACTS:

The majority of the trucks are operating illegal. No health department license. People have gotten sick. Out of over a dozen trucks, 3 have health department licenses.
TRUCKS HAVE BEEN CLOSED DOWN:
Over the past few years several trucks were closed down. Within minutes after the health department put up big stickers saying closed by the health department for health code violations, they covered the sign with a piece of cardboard and reopened right away as soon as the police and health department left.

MISLEADING LIES:

These are not poor immigrants just trying to make a buck. One guy owns around ten of the trucks. The Cubby wings Truck ( Which in the past has been closed down by health department) Owns the Wings Truck , The fruit truck behind the wings truck and the illegal fruit cart inside Gantry.

The Chinelos Taco Truck has several Trucks that operate around Long Island City and also has that disgusting white van behind it that stores all their food. Yes, food is stored in that van. Some of these trucks operate all year round. 24 hours a day. Health department law requires these trucks leave at night and go back to their garage and get cleaned every day. They do not.

These are not small immigrants making a living, these are pretty big businesses operating on public property not following any laws of the city Of New York and doing as they please.

DESTROYING OUR ENVIRONMENT:

The past few years when Macy's had all the cars and trucks removed for the fireworks, residents took photos of the sewage drains. Inside these drains was grease dumped by the food trucks. Our sewers do not go to a treatment plant, they flow directly into the east river. Basically the food truck grease is just flowing into the East River.
RATS: AS most of you notice the garbage overflows by these food trucks. As by law these food trucks are required to have their own garbage cans and remove the garbage at night. They do not. So the parks department garbage cans are overflowing and this is feeding the rats. Anyone notice at night dozens of rats feasting at these parks garbage cans?

PETITION SIGNED BY AROUND A THOUSAND RESIDENTS:

A petition was signed by around a thousand residents for CB2 to recommend no parking signs from 10pm to 7am. This would have helped control the food truck mess. There was supposed to be a vote. Residents who do not even live in our neighborhood tabled the motion. One CB2 member suggested we take away 20 parking spots from this community and put a grid in for them to get their electric etc. CB2 who has no wisdom it seems, decided this was a great idea and then tabled the motion to put in parking signs. Meanwhile when this idea was presented to the state parks department according to a source, the idea was shot down right away, saying there would be no grid on state property.

JUNK CARS TAKING UP ALL PARKING SPOTS:

As most of you know, all those junk cars parked at Gantry belong to the food trucks. Residents can never get a spot to park there. These junk cars are even there year round saving the spots for next summer. The food trucks own the whole Gantry waterfront.

RESIDENTS ON GANTRY SUFFERING:

The residents directly on Gantry have been abused by years by this situation. Food Truck owners cars are parked beside their trucks taking up lanes that are supposed to be for traffic. Customers double and triple park to order food. Traffic can not move, horns blasting, music blasting from these cars and this all goes into everyone's apartment. They now have scooters parked illegal inside Gantry to deliver food. They are on all the food apps, Uber, Grub Hub, Door Dash etc. And our park is their office.

WHAT ENFORCEMENT AND PARKING RULES WILL DO:

It would allow residents to maybe get a public parking spot that the food trucks refuse to allow them to have. Visitors who are in the park drinking and partying and doing graffiti will no longer have the option of partying and then getting some food and then continuing their party in our parkland. When they get hungry, they will leave to go somewhere else to eat. It will also allow the city to come in and sweep the area and clean the area which is impossible now because the cars and trucks never move. It will also create a safer environment for residents to live in.

CB2 ATTENDEES ACCUSE THIS COMMUNITY OF RACISM:

They claimed that our community is racist and that we are going after brown and black people and poor immigrants that are trying to make a living. We covered that above about being poor immigrants and this is a proven lie. But would these same people think the same way if all these food truck operators were white?
These same people seem to think if you are a immigrant or black and brown you are allowed to be above the law. You do not have to follow the law then. But imagine if all these people running these food trucks were white, what would they say then? Would they still think it is OK to not obey the rules of New York City? And the facts remain, that these food trucks are not run by any black person, they are run by people from Egypt, Europe and Hispanics who have been here a very long time.

THE END OF THE SPEECH:

The facts remain that now matter where you are from and no matter what color you are the law should be followed. Health department laws protect the public. Would you eat in a restaurant that was not licensed by the Health Department?

ANOTHER NOTE: Nasty comments arguments will not be tolerated on this page. This is a discussion page. Anyone deciding they want to call names or yell racism will be suspended from this page. This is not about racism, it is about the quality of life for residents weather black, white, Hispanic or whatever. We have every race living on the waterfront and every race is being abused by this situation. This is a human problem, not a color problem.

ATTEND THE MEETING. LET THE 108TH KNOW YOU WANT CURRENT LAWS ENFORCED!
